Title: How to share files from one computer to another
Post by: BOZ on March 13, 2006, 10:02:07 PM
OK, just got my computer back up and running the other day.  we both have Win XP now, and are connected to the DSL via a router.  can anyone step me through getting a shared folder on each computer as if i have no idea how to do it (let's just pretend, shall we)?  ;)

i have tried the "obvious" ways of setting it up, such as clicking on a folder to make it a shared folder. i think the problem is that our computers are not yet considering one other to be on the same network.

Biggest thing - make sure you have individual computer names & share the same workgroup...

Right-click on My Computer
Go to the Computer Name tab
Click on the Change button to change the workgroup name
Pick anything - so long as it's the same for both computers

If that clears it up, let me know.  If not, we will have to try other stuff.

What killed me at first was my software firewall (ZoneAlarm).  I had to let each computer be permissive with the other.  You can find each computer's name by opening a command prompt (Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt) and typing "ipconfig".

you mean the desktop icon?  i don't see that tab.

that didn't give me a name, but it did give me my computer's IP address (which looked very similar to the router's address).

Right click on your My Computer icon. Click Properties. Click the Computer Name tab. Click the Change button. See where it says Workgroup? Make sure that both XP computers have the same workgroup name. You can leave it if they both say "Workgroup" if not name them both to Boz if you want. If you change them you'll have to reboot them.

All nice and worgroupy? Sweet! Now right click on the folder you want to share. Click Properties. Click the Sharing tab. Click the "If you understand the security risks but want to share blah blah blah." line. Click the "Just enable file sharing" and shut the fuck up radio button. Click OK. Check the "Share this folder on the network", fill in the box with a share name (whatever you want, something simple). You can click the "allow everyone to do stuff to this folder" check box if you want, but if your just copying from it, its not necessary. Click OK. Now you go to the computer you want to copy the files to and double click My Network Places. Click View Workgroup Computers it's on the left hand sidebar menu. You should see the computer with the shared folder in there, double click that and your share should be there.

Hope I didn't leave anything out. Good luck!

We think that would be your firewall. you'll either need to set both computers to trust the other, or disable the firewall on both computers.

Yeah, could be your firewalls or AV software if you have any running. Also do a Start/Run and type in the path manually: \\ingrid\share(whatever your share name is)

Here's a link with some pictures:

Are you running SP1 or SP2?

Enabling SP1's crappy firewall can very easily prevent filesharing.

Disable it and upgrade to SP2 if possible, or get ZoneAlarm if not.

as i strongly suspected, the problem seems to be with her computer.  i shut off her firewall and left mine on, and bingo!  the files were now sharable.  apparently, when i turned her firewall back on, the files were still sharable.  that may change; we'll see.  i'll let you know if any more problems come back up with that.  really, i just wanted to steal her porno, robot chicken clips, and pictures of baby.  :)

heh, if only i could get it to work on mine in the first place...

SP1 and SP2 = Service Pack 1 and 2. They're sort of intermediate versions of Windows.

without looking, i suspect that she has SP1 and i have SP2.

she has told me that i can't do any more settings changes on her computer, because she's blaming me for the connection not working so well... :p (when it has always worked not so well)

if there is an "inconspicuous mode" for zonealarm i might just get it, but if it starts popping up all over the place, i would be in trouble.  ;)
