Title: History of the World: Three-man Variant
Post by: RPGPundit on December 10, 2006, 03:14:06 PM
The roman game was cancelled today, because two of my players (Federico and Adrianna, a couple) cancelled on account of Federico going off to Antarctica tomorrow, and wanting to spend the day together; while Eduardo called in sick on account of explosive diarrea (he plays Sir Firearm in my D&D Campaign, anyone who's read my logs of it on the wizards' website will get the joke).

So that left Jong, Alejo and I.  We decided to play history of the world, only there were only three of us, so we instituted the following variant game:

1. Each player gets to play two empires per turn.
2. The empires are diferentiated by colour.  You cannot "pass through" your other colour, you have to fight yourself if you want to pass.
3. Each player gets two sets of cards which must each be assigned to one colour.
4. You cannot give the empire in hand during the drawing phase to your own alternate colour, unless its the very last card of the turn and you have no other open choice.
5. In the first turn, the roll to see who draws first is done as usual, but after each player has done one draw, they do a second in reverse order.
6. At the end of the game, you add both colours' scores to determine who won the game.

The game played remarkably well, requiring a different kind of strategy when it came to avoiding screwing your own other colour, trying to balance out the need to get points with your active empire with the need to leave room for your OTHER active empire of the turn and not bump into your own territory.

In the end, I won with a combined total of 389 points, then Jong with 362, and Alejo came in last with 360.  Breaking it down to seperate colours I came in first, Jong second, Alejo third,  me fourth, alejo fifth, and jong sixth.

It was an interesting experiments, and continues to show the potential that this game has for entertainment. Whoever designed History of the World is a freaking genius.
