This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Favorite Prince of Persia game?
« on: January 05, 2022, 08:24:11 PM »
This one goes way back for me; I played the original PC version around 1990, and still love it. The movement animations were a step above others and I liked the theme of the game. I also remember being impressed by my friend's SNES version a little later. Though the SNES game is very similar, they did take the Arabian Nights feel a step further. I liked Sands of Time, but I don't think I ever finished it. Which PoP games did you enjoy?

First one. I played it on the PC around the same time you did and it really stuck with me. Loved the music, the little cutscenes, loved how the guy ran and jumped, swordfights were a lot of fun.

I think I figured out the mirror man fight by accident.

I also played Prince of Persia 2 and eventually Sands of Time. Sands was pretty cool but nothing was quite like the original.

Anything after The Shadow and the Flame was just an illusion conjured up by the wily Jaffar to mislead you.
Obvious troll is obvious. RIP, Bill.

I think the game was my introduction to the "Arabian Nights" kind of setting in general, and I like revisiting that every now and then.

Apparently the mirror image was the first opponent that Mechner came up with (there are some interesting origin videos on youtube)

By the way, the Super Nintendo  version can be played here online for free:

The PC version and some others can also be found, but I found this especially interesting since I always liked it but never finished the SNES version (playing only at a friend's place way back).

Finding some videos on the origin of PoP I realized that this film (Thief of Baghdad) was the main inspiration:

You can actually see some of the points of inspiration here, continuing into PoP2.
