This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I don't really follow videogames anymore, but I kinda expected to see Ultima on the list.

Sadly my dear sir, Ultima doesn't get the respect it used to.  Garriot kinda killed off the series starting with 7 and getting worse from there, and most people now only even know about UO.

Which is sad.  I still think U6 was one of the best RPGs ever made.  But it also means I'm not surprised it doesn't show up on a list like that, even if the entire bloody RPG genre owes it just about everything.

Final Fantasy wouldn't even exist without Ultima and Wizardry.

Quote from: UmaSamaIt's funny how they included Virtua Fighter and left out Mortal Kombat, the franchise that was the highest selling fighting game for over a decade, and stills get very decent sells.
Also how the fuck do they put Madden, and left out the FIFA series, madden sells only in America whilst FIFA sells on the ENTIRE FREAKING WORLD.

Also the title reads: "The only thing more surprising than the games that made the list are those that did not."

They're saying it!!
You should stop by Gamespot instead of IGN Jong.

Mortal Kombat gets snubbed by a lot of "hardcore" gamers.  It's stupid that Virtua Fighter makes the list in front of it.  It's even stupider that Street Fighter, a series that hasn't been relevant in a full decade, got ranked so high.

Eh.  Mortal Kombat is a series of shitty games that brought nothing to the table but shock value.

Virtua Fighter hasn't been high on the sales charts for a long time, though that might change with 5, but it also created the 3d fighting game as we know it today.

Without VF, there's no Battle Arena, no Tobal, no Tekken, no Soul Calibur, none of it.

Everything was moving towards 3d fighting games anyway.  Virtua Fighter may have been first, but the genre would have been stillborn if not for Tekken and the now highly berated Battle Arena Toshinden.  Namco's Tekken and Soul series of fighters deserve more credit than Sega's VF offerings.

As for Street Fighter versus Mortal Kombat.  I know if I had to choose between MK2 and Street Fighter II Turbo, I'd choose MK2 without hesitation.  And while SF stagnated and became a retro joke, MK moved on and stayed at least semi-current.  Sometimes it fell flat on its face (MK3 and MK4) but other times it soared (MK2 and Deception).
