This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Soul Calibur 5 came out last week and never have i seen a more gorgeous fighting game. Nor one with such a dearth of content or balance.

The singleplayer story is complete crap featuring the most annoying voice acting i have EVER (and this is no exaggeration) known. I refuse to play against Pyrrah for that reason. The Japs need to learn how to write stories and characters, but she is by far and away the worst I have ever seen (and i played ff13 - until i got sick of how bad the story was).

Beyond that it's just arcade mode with a few variances and a difficulty that quickly reaches psychotic. To call Legendary Souls mode (arcade mode but made far too difficult) hard is to say the sun's a bit warm.

Online is surprisingly smooth. For once a game developer seems to have cracked the netcode. It's just a shame the roster is a) full of filler (3 characters that mimic others and others notable by their inexplicable absence) and b) honkingly unbalanced. Not that balance has ever been SC's strong point.

Some gameplay controls have been inspired by Crapcom, for reasons unknown. There is now a universal (and entirely cheesy) super move for all characters. Some are way more powerful than others. Guard Impact has been changed to the same control instead of the guard button and the timing windows for such effects including the pointlessly precise Just Guard (timing is right down to the frame) are way too narrow.

A mixed bag really. But after a week of playing my beloved Raphael only to find he is a turkey with no power, no range, and not much speed nor priority and he's so linear he's predictable I feel rather bummed out. Why Namco why?

Rushed, 6/10.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

I haven't played the last couple Soul Calibur games, GW, but I have to ask - is there a video game you actually like?  Might serve as a point of reference so I know where you're coming from with these kinds of threads.
Wampus Country - Whimsical tales on the fantasy frontier

"Describing Erik Jensen\'s Wampus Country setting is difficult"  -- Grognardia

"Well worth reading."  -- Steve Winter

"...seriously nifty stuff..." -- Bruce Baugh

"[Erik is] the Carrot-Top of role-playing games." -- Jared Sorensen, who probably meant it as an insult, but screw that guy.

"Next con I\'m playing in Wampus."  -- Harley Stroh

I didn't say that SC5 was a bad game. It's a lacklustre game. Given the franchise's rich history it's disappointing to leave so much out. On top of that, some of the character controls are not remotely optimised for a console controller which IMO is unacceptable.

SC2 is the best fighting game ever made, and it didn't have online.
