This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

This game is fun, needs work in the scare department but all in all a good time.  It gives me Doom 3 vibes with customization thrown in.  You can improve your weapons, suit, and even the items that give you telekinesis and a kind of time slow power.  The monsters are cool, and the change from shoot 'em in the head style kills is interesting.  The way monsters handle having a limb removed is pretty slick.  The story so far is decent, but I'm not that far in.  The voice acting is good and the graphics are nice.  I'm not quite sure how I feel about the over the shoulder view yet.

Anyone else rent or buy this?

I picked this up, along with Saints Row 2, yesterday.  I'm pretty much with you on the scares, most of them have been the cheap startles with bad guys popping out of vents and whatnot.  The menu system is brilliant!  In most games bringing up menus for maps, inventory and the like pauses the game, but in Dead Space the menus become are brought up in real-time so you have to be careful accessing them lest a baddie pops up behind you while you're staring at your inventory.

I like the third person view because of the way DS has no HUD and on-screen display for your vitals.  There's a lot of little, well-done design decisions like these that makes for an immersive, entertaining game.

Just finished it.  The bosses were way too easy but I had a good time.  I've found that picking 2 or 3 weapons and sticking with them for your first playthrough is a good idea.   That way the random ammo drops are more useful and you can spend your money buying new armor and buying power nodes to power up/customize your gear.

It's a good tactic and it makes the 2nd playthrough fun because I still have plenty of other weapons I haven't even tried yet.

It is unfortunate that you can't up the difficulty on follow up play throughs, I'd like to pump up the enemies to go along with my now tweaked gear.

I got it about 3 weeks ago and still haven't played it (no time). I did see the beginning at a friend's house and it looked quite promising.

To date I've had two attempts at playing this: I've given up after a few levels  both times.

Graphics are great, music too, sounds effects top notch, animations of the horrors is grand too.

But yeah, linear as all heck. No real puzzles to solve, and the Scary Monster Jumps Out action gets tired quite quickly.

Liked Dead Space, loved Dead Space 2. The best Survival Horror game, IMHO.

(Yes, better than Resident Evil 4.)

Though I'm probably not going to buy 3, because EA can their own mouths. Seriously, screw those guys.

Just bought Dead Space off a friend two weeks ago, haven't played it before then (I know it's a few years old now.)

The problem with the game is the schlock aspect. It's too much "Agh, here's another monster popping out at me!" and, "Oh, yet another monster!" and, "My, that monster seemed to pop out in a manner quite similar to the last," and finally, "I knew you were coming! Take Mr Plasma Cutter to the limbs!"

Needed more careful scripting, and less action (can't believe I'm saying that). Fewer, more carefully constructed scenarios. More time in crazy suspense. Less ridiculous unbelievable blood spatters all over the place. Also, much more time should have been spent on the characters, so that we care about them more.

Also, the division of the game into very obvious chapters is distracting. Needs to be a smoother way of defining levels. Something like Half Life 2 which has chapters, though they are far less discernible.

The weapons/upgrades purchase system is quite good, though. I like having to use careful resources tactics to survive.
