Thanks to some friends we had the chance to hang out with this weekend, my crew is getting back in to MtG in a big way.  Looks like three of us may be able to participate in FNM in either Standard or Modern formats.  Any suggestions?

We ordered two M15 deck building kits and a box of boosters.  God willing we can get three decks, maybe more, that aren't a total disaster to play.

Standard and Modern are expensive formats. Fun but expensive.
(FNM is the Standard format.)

If you are very competitive and have money to burn, FNM is a great way to play.

If you want to have casual fun, I suggest Commander (also known as EDH) format. You can only use one of each non-land card so, even if they are expensive you only need one.
Most Commander cards are cheap since there is 1/4th of the demand and many are only good in Commander format. Also there are many good preconstructed Commander decks to start with if you don't already have a pile of old cards.
(If you do have a pile of old cards, you can't use them in Standard.)

I would go Standard.

Depending on how competitive your area is, you may not need to spend a large chunk of change.

I've found it to be easier to just buy singles that you want, unless you are into the thrill of opening boosters.

I guess playing FNM is a pressure to go with a real format.

Back in the UK we just use to buy a box of boosters run some sealled deck nights then use the box as a kind of "cube" for the year adding more cards as the expansions came out and booster draftign them and adding from the other stuff.

once you have a box of the core expanson and each supplement which comes to c. $300  you can continue to play from that set for a while as a "cube" or you can rip out the rares and sell them which usually gets you back most of your cash and then you start again.
