This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How long do you guys wait before churning out the first settlers? Population 1, 2, 3, more?

Till 3 or 4 if you do it before that you cut to much into your science production.

I try and capture another civs or twos first workers in order to cut down on my growth downtime.

My usual strategy is to wait until size 2 to start building a settler.

There are many reasons to wait until after your city grows to do this.

First off, the production you spend while waiting for the city to grow isn't wasted. It's stored away and you can get back to it after the settler pops out.

Second, your settler draws all food and production away from the city while its being built. However, it DOESN'T drain the commerce - vital for getting your research done on time. That means that if you start building a settler right away, you're stuck making the setter slower (since a size 1 city doesn't have as much food and production to devote to the project). AND you're stuck with less commerce, in the long term. If you wait until you're size 2, you're bringing in the commerce from 2 squares, and building the settler faster.
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways, it's still rock and roll to me.

You can talk all you want about theory, craft, or whatever. But in the end, it's still just new ways of looking at people playing make-believe and having a good time with their friends. Intellectualize or analyze all you want, but we've been playing the same game since we were 2 years old. We just have shinier books, spend more money, and use bigger words now.

So what is the highest level troop you have ever had?

So far 8th is my best... wish I hadn't upgraded him cause 9 never came cause that drop back to 10 xps is hell when you need 65.

My troops generaly didn't get very high, but I tend not to run a "conquer the world" type of game, so they didn't have a lot of combat experience.

If you don't kill them all how can you possibly win?

Has anyone actually watched the trailer I linked to, which was the point of this thread? Don't make me throw a hissy fit and demand the thread be closed! :muttering:

We do have that sort of power don't we.

I watched the trailer but having no sound on my PC found it a bit lackluster.

I know you're being squirrelly, but I'll answer anyway for those who don't know.

You can win by:

Conquest (eliminating all other players)
Domination (owning 75% of the territory, which often happens before conquest unless you're razing the cities)
Culture (get 3 cities up to "Legendary" culture status before anybody else manages to win)
Spaceship (complete the Spaceship, which requires a lot of advanced techs as well as a good industrial base)
Points (the game ends at a set date - if that date arrives, and you have the most points, you win! Points are simply a measure of population, happieness, technologies, territory, and everything else, combined into a total score.)
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways, it's still rock and roll to me.

I watched the trailer.  Reasonable trailer.  Nothing to write home about.
