Title: City of Heroes is back
Post by: Gog to Magog on January 06, 2022, 08:45:01 AM
For anyone that ever played it (or those that didn't but might be interested) City of Heroes/Villains has been back for a while and is totally free to play AND is receiving updates via an awesome team of volunteers that have full permission to host it.

I have been playing it with some friends again and it still remains the best playing and best written MMO I've ever played.

Is how to get it

As a bonus info: Works just fine on Linux, as well.

Played it for a while again, but noticed that my tastes in gaming have changed at least when it comes to games like that. I just can't stomach the grind any more, not the MMO-style one anyway.

Before I even look, is this just another scam.  "Free to play, but if you want to have anything worth having, buy this and this and this"

otherwise known as the scummy "Pay to Win" model, like World of Tanks.

It is quite literally impossible to give money to the game. It is run by passionate fans that host it with the blessing of the original developer/publisher.

If you WANTED to buy something, you couldn't. In fact, it is quite illegal for the current hosts to accept ANY money above and beyond donations through their website (which only open for a brief window and are pretty much immediately met by the community) that CANNOT exceed the cost of that hosting.

So yeah when I said it's "totally free" I meant "totally free" as if the words I chose were chosen for a reason. Crazy I know.

Your sarcasm shouldn't be surprising, given the extreme level of ASSHOLE DOUCHE on this forum/site, however, it's a perfectly reasonable question, as it is VERY common for games to call themselves "free to play" when in fact they are "pay to win".   In addition, the game itself DOES describe itself as "Pay to Play" though it then goes on to say this is merely a humorous term, in that real world money is not involved, perks are paid for through earned experience points.  So, basically, fuck you, and I hope the servers crash right in the middle of your game.

Anyways, back to City of Heroes. I haven't been on recently, but I do know the folks running Homecoming not only got their hands on everything they needed to run the game as of the latest official patches before it was shut down, I think they also got their mitts on some prototyped stuff -- new powersets, etc -- that hadn't been ready yet. And put that out there as well for people to play with.

I gotta say, even with the engine's age showing, it's still a beautiful game.

Yup they've added a new archetype (Sentinel) and added new power sets as well like Seismic. They're doing a great job. I've fallen into the rabbit hole of base building because they reduced costs of everything in bases to 0 prestige so I've been doing a lot of that to make the base for me and my friends as cool as possible. The DM in me has also seen me start creating Archetype missions for the other members of the supergroup. I started with 5-mission story arcs detailing how our characters met.

CoH's options for creating your own content is genuinely the best thing in an MMO I've ever seen

I am still amazingly salty to this day over how NCSoft did City of Heroes dirty with the shutdown.

I was recently at a friend's house, and his sons were playing Fortnite. And all I could think was 'imagine CoH with those graphics and resolution'.

Yeah the shutdown was absolutely idiotic especially considering the super-hero boom that Iron Man would kick off not too long after. They REALLY shot themselves in the foot with that.

I guess the upshot now though is that pretty much anything can run CoH

Just picked it up a few days back, i'd never really played it back in the day, not being a huge comic book fan, though my
roommate at the time made me set up his computer for the first time just to play it.  Which he did for hundreds of hours, though he was
a massive comic book fan who loathed fantasy he made me tutor him on playing Baldur's Gate just to improve his City of Heroes skills.

Looking forward to seeing what i was missing out on at the time.

I would suggest against playing on Homecoming. They're a bunch of shady assholes who kept the entire pirated server concealed, with the owner, Leandro, doxxing all the users and threatening users who would want to share it with the community. Play on Thunderspy instead, since they have far more lax moderation, and aren't involved in Leandro's personality cult.

The Source Code is available, if you know where to look.
(at the time I was doing it, it was a link on the HC front page)

I got it running as a Virtual Machine, but an MMO is pretty boring, without other people...

The Character Creator, while 15+ years old, is actually pretty robust.
It makes pretty neat characters you can save as images, for super- or fantasy-games (just ignore the hands!).

Based. Also, Homecoming consistently lies about being "in talks" with NCSoft to make their server official. They've been "in talks."  for nearly 4 years since Homecoming began. And ban you for questioning "the talks" at all. "The talks" just exist to fool clueless Boomers into thinking Homecoming is the "official" server when it isn't and it isn't even the best server.  That's before we get into the whole mess of the existence of SCORE, the original private server. Which was a secret server run by Leandro for over a decade whilst he cried crocodile tears that City of Heroes would never have private servers and the source code was lost. Whilst he intentionally sabotaged other efforts to make CoH private servers and ran a culty community with a fucking spider diagram of everyone he invited and who they invited. And banned and doxxed anyone who dared disparage the cult of Leo. He gaslit, bullied, doxxed, and ridiculed an entire community behind it's back.

Ignoring all of that. It's the worst running server because no one running it has any clue how to deal with the combination of old ass code and Leo's amateurish coding that actually makes the server run worse. Every other server uses another branch based on the last retail release (that Leo promised to give but never did. Until a german guy leaked it.) with coding improvements to make servers run more stably. Also there are resources and tutorials to start your own server if you wish.

Check out
Rebirth (just added over 800 new parts in their character creator, other than that it's pretty vanilla)
Thunderspy (Homecoming doesn't like this one because they were the first to start a server away from them using better code. It's the New Content server. New raids, new costume pieces, new content.)
We Have Cake ( The "fun" server. Has a freeform class allowing you to mix abilities but this isn't as fun as it sounds.)

All of these servers run better and are more stable than Homecoming. And the players aren't all Fire/Spines brute bots grinding in AE.

It is a pity and a blessing that Champions Online, CoH's more or less successor, is so fallow.
Why? Because it could be in the same horrible state as Neverwinter. And for a time it and Star Trek Online WERE in the exact same sinking boat. Cryptic is obsessed with change for changes sake and I am surprised they did not change CoH to death a hundred times over.

Champions still has one of the best character appearance customization of any MMO I have seen. Carrying over CoH's amazingly robust character appearance customization. And with a freeform slot on CO you have a pretty darn robust chargen too. Which I assume CoH had as well in some form? Their Star Trek MMO is built off the same engine as CO and has a fairly open character creation. Nowhere near as broad as CO on appearance options. But pretty good. And character abilities are 95% freeform. You get some department specific skills. The rest you can place wherever and unlock however you want.

Why Neverwinter lacks pretty much every one of these features is a mystery. And over the years they have only narrowed the choices. This last big change finally tipped me over into pretty much quitting NWO.

My memory is that CO's outfit designer is stuck behind a massive amount of lockbox unlocks (which would be my gripe about STO, as well.)

My memory is that CO's outfit designer is stuck behind a massive amount of lockbox unlocks (which would be my gripe about STO, as well.)

Not really. Most of the good costume parts are from other sources than lockboxes. Mostly events. Back when events were much much fewer and far between that was a different case. But between when I stopped playing CO and when got back in it has shifted.

That can of course change if a lockbox had some interesting pieces. But in the last 3 years its been rather meh. And often anything you might want from one ends up in the exchange at sometimes reasonable prices even.

Currently the sources of costume parts on CO are...
Drops: I never seem to have any luck with costume drops. But one of my friends has had pretty good luck there.
Events: usually at least 1 new piece every event. Sometimes 3 or more.
Recognition vendors: Theres several now and some are easier to get points for than others.
Costume Contest tokens: Never won one. But at the end of every contest is a battle and award of a basic dev token for a hidden shop.
Trade Paperback shop: This comes around every few months. Ive never had any luck with the higher end vouchers. But not bad with the commons and so on.
Voucher vendor: Costume vouchers go on sake in exchange often really cheap so it can be a good way to get some parts without resorting to lockboxes. I tend to buy a few when they are cheap and hand off to friends who are just getting into CO.
Lockboxes: In the last 2 years alone the costumes from lockboxes has been rather bland. Attention seems to be more on the sidekicks from those. Keys can be bought off exchange if course rather than with zen.

All this is VERY YMMV as what I consider good or not someone else might feel the opposite.

As for STO... Lockboxes have costume parts? When? I've never seen a single one in a lockbox loadout so far? I'll have to recheck but pretty sure no recent one has had any.
Now lobi shop costumes is a different matter. Unless are playing the long game for the yearly lobi haul option, lockboxes are the only way to get crystals. The rest are locked off in the Zen store. Though you can just trade dilithium for zen and go that route.

STO feels the most anemic and limited for costume parts of the three. Seems more than a few sets can not be mixed with other sets. Especially the rep unlocks.

Oh jeez, costume drops. You just reminded me of a hilarious bit.

When inventions got released for City of Heroes, there were recipes to make costume pieces. Things like wings, rocket boots, etc. But Cryptic/Paragon made the drop rate like... one tenth what it should have been. Oops.

The result was a textbook example of supply and demand. Rocket boots in particular were VERY popular, but they didn't drop much if at all. Result? The rocket boots recipe on the marketplace was even more expensive than a maximum level unique set enhancement recipe.

This was fixed eventually, but I still found it amusing.

Whoops, with STO I should clarify I'm talking about Starships, not Uniform pieces.

Not that it really matters to me; I got the OS movie uniforms (maroon with black bellbottoms, baby!), and I've decked out every Feddie crew I have in those.

(Now, if I could get a endgame-level Movie Constitution-Class starship without having to spend a fortune or choke a hobo, that'd be nice too!)

Yeah, if it isnt from the rep system, vanity skins that aren't in lockboxes can be counted on one hand.

The sheer amount of greed Cryptic shows in STO though is truly appalling. 30$ for ONE SHIP. One pack of FOUR ships, 50 keys and 300 lobi is priced at freaking FIVE-HUNDRED BUCKS! No. Im not joking. 500$.

Its weird. STO has alot of story to play through, and theres differencec for each faction even. Champions has alot of story too. Though new content is now few and far between.

Meanwhile Neverwinter they CUT content, then cut more. From a game already very anemic on actual story. First all the adventure story areas lost their ending group battle. Then they removed one of the nicer looking campaign areas. Then they replaced that with a draub looking new one. Then they removed seven whole adventure story areas and cut more content.

That's weird, I could swear when I was playing Star Citizen earlier today I was playing an actual game that exists and is playable. But obviously you know better.

There are many arguments against CIG you can make. From the long development time, poor management and communication, and focus on pointless features. But you need to stop using 5 year old information and criticize the game as it exists now.  Because right now there is a playable game. It's not very good. But it exists and I find it bizarre when critics try to claim the game doesn't exist when it does.
