This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

City of Heroes is back
« on: January 06, 2022, 08:45:01 AM »
For anyone that ever played it (or those that didn't but might be interested) City of Heroes/Villains has been back for a while and is totally free to play AND is receiving updates via an awesome team of volunteers that have full permission to host it.

I have been playing it with some friends again and it still remains the best playing and best written MMO I've ever played.

As a bonus info: Works just fine on Linux, as well.

Played it for a while again, but noticed that my tastes in gaming have changed at least when it comes to games like that. I just can't stomach the grind any more, not the MMO-style one anyway.

Before I even look, is this just another scam.  "Free to play, but if you want to have anything worth having, buy this and this and this"

otherwise known as the scummy "Pay to Win" model, like World of Tanks.

It is quite literally impossible to give money to the game. It is run by passionate fans that host it with the blessing of the original developer/publisher.

If you WANTED to buy something, you couldn't. In fact, it is quite illegal for the current hosts to accept ANY money above and beyond donations through their website (which only open for a brief window and are pretty much immediately met by the community) that CANNOT exceed the cost of that hosting.

So yeah when I said it's "totally free" I meant "totally free" as if the words I chose were chosen for a reason. Crazy I know.

Your sarcasm shouldn't be surprising, given the extreme level of ASSHOLE DOUCHE on this forum/site, however, it's a perfectly reasonable question, as it is VERY common for games to call themselves "free to play" when in fact they are "pay to win".   In addition, the game itself DOES describe itself as "Pay to Play" though it then goes on to say this is merely a humorous term, in that real world money is not involved, perks are paid for through earned experience points.  So, basically, fuck you, and I hope the servers crash right in the middle of your game.

When one person acts like an asshole towards you, you've probably just encountered an asshole.  When everyone acts like an asshole towards you, odds are you are the asshole.  Your entire demeanor from your very first post has exuded asshole-ness.  It's no wonder people treat you poorly...

In other words, you're a dishonest piece of shit.  You can't refute the sledgehammering FACT that his sarcasm was idiotic, and my post was correct.  So you fall back on Ad Hominem attack.  Go kill yourself.

Shut the fuck up. I watched you throw an absolute temper tantrum because you get answers you might not like, and then ran around renaming all your threads?

Go cry on ENWorld or TBP or something.

I'm giving you a warning. Since you got here, you've made like 500 reported posts, started and then tried to nuke 2 threads, and now you're making personal attacks that are OFF TOPIC.

Here's the deal: report one more post frivolously (and in case you have any doubt, ALL your reports so far have been frivolous), or derail one more thread, and you're banned. This is your ONLY WARNING.

Anyways, back to City of Heroes. I haven't been on recently, but I do know the folks running Homecoming not only got their hands on everything they needed to run the game as of the latest official patches before it was shut down, I think they also got their mitts on some prototyped stuff -- new powersets, etc -- that hadn't been ready yet. And put that out there as well for people to play with.

I gotta say, even with the engine's age showing, it's still a beautiful game.

Yup they've added a new archetype (Sentinel) and added new power sets as well like Seismic. They're doing a great job. I've fallen into the rabbit hole of base building because they reduced costs of everything in bases to 0 prestige so I've been doing a lot of that to make the base for me and my friends as cool as possible. The DM in me has also seen me start creating Archetype missions for the other members of the supergroup. I started with 5-mission story arcs detailing how our characters met.

CoH's options for creating your own content is genuinely the best thing in an MMO I've ever seen
