This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Speaking of boardgames, does anyone know any good ones for the Thirty Years' War or other Renaissance-period stuff, particularly France during the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV?

It's a little before the TYW period, but how about Virgin Queen?

I recently picked up the Escape from Colditz: 75th Anniversary Edition but haven't had a chance to play it yet.

Looks cool, thanks.

Hmm...420 minutes to play?

Might have to check it out and see if that's really how long it takes.

Has anyone played Conquest of Paradise, wherein each player controls a Polynesian tribe colonizing islands in the South Seas?

Warhammer Quest, FFG's late-timetable WFRP board/card game is really good.

The rules however are piss poorly written.

Hanabi.

Its a great game.  Very simple.  Short.  Easy to learn.  Very well designed.

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/98778/hanabi

It's a co-operative game which normally I don't like.  I find most of them end up with one person playing and everyone else just moving their pieces.  I also find most of them take the form of; go somewhere, do something.  Which I find dull.

Hanabi is a card game.  Everyone holds their cards facing away from them.  On your turn you either play a card, discard, or give a clue.  If you play a card out of order you get closer to blowing up.  If you discard a card you need you can't get beyondvthat point.

The only clues you can give are number or color.  If you tell someone that "this card is blue" for example you have to point at every blue card.  Same for number.

I think it has a lot to teach about information theory.  The only thing you can tell someone is "play or discard" but you have to use information about number and color to tell them that.  I mean you can try to tell people other things but it just won't get through.  Your servery limited vocabulary means, the meaning of the words you use flips.  Sometimes telling some one, " this is a 1" means play it, sometimes it means discard it.  They have to know which it is, and you have to know that they know.

Information decays.  You could have told me "this is a 1" three turns ago, but do I remember?

Any way.  Fun quick simple and small game.  Every collection should have it.

See Hanabi in every decently stocked boardgame store. Thanks for the recommendation. There is a Geisha themed card game that looks awesome I saw on Dice Tower a while ago hopefully I can scoop it before it goes totally out of print as the theme is very niche.

Know you're a big Dumas fan so this game should be right up your alley. Looks to still be available on Amazon for a semi-reasonable pirce too.

And Royal Palace is exactly about playing in the court of Louis XV (close enough?).

Ooh, wow, never heard of those. I want! I want! That musketeer one I'd fight up my alley! And the Royal Palace one looks pretty neat, too. I'll have to look that up to get some reviews and an idea of what it plays like. I thank you but my budget does not! :p

On the palace intrigue front love letter is a nice quick game.  Your are trying to smuggle a love letter to the princess.  If you do she will speak well of you at breakfast.

Coup is a great game.  Its like love letter squared.  I'm really impressed they managed to pack so much game play; strategy, bluffing, deduction, resource management.  Into such a short little game.

You can fit coup, love letter and hanabi into a sandwhich sized tupperware.   And everyone should.

Those are both good games. I don't have the actual Love Letter game but instead have the Archer version (same game-play).

I've heard very good things about the Arkham Card Game but I'm not sure my wife will tolerate yet another Cthulhu themed game.

It IS kind of expensive really, given the replayability isn't THAT great. But then the expansions scenarios are pretty cheap I suppose.
If you DO want to play with 2-4 people, then you need to buy ANOTHER core game set to ensure ALL the various cards are available to people so they can play different characters.

So yeah, it's a bit of a luxury purchase really.
I also got a divider plastic box thing to keep the cards sorted and separated properly and plastic ziplock bags for the various counters etc, it speeds up setting up by a LOT if you do this.

Have I mentioned Caverna yet?  We played last night.  Its essentially dwarf fortress the board game.  Which I think is rediculas and awesome.  Its by the guy who did Agricola, so you you could call it Agricola 2 with dwarfs.
