This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Can you buy it in stores? I tried to find it but it seemed to be KS only.

I'd suggest Google's shopping feature but we know how you hate Google links.

It IS kind of expensive really, given the replayability isn't THAT great. But then the expansions scenarios are pretty cheap I suppose.
If you DO want to play with 2-4 people, then you need to buy ANOTHER core game set to ensure ALL the various cards are available to people so they can play different characters.

So yeah, it's a bit of a luxury purchase really.
I also got a divider plastic box thing to keep the cards sorted and separated properly and plastic ziplock bags for the various counters etc, it speeds up setting up by a LOT if you do this.

Not much replayability? Why so?

I've been into board games quite a bit over the years, but these are a couple of my favorites and they can be played solo, if needs be, but not as fun of course.

Roll Player. A game about rolling up a fantasy RPG character. You pick a race, get a class, background, and alignment card, then roll dice and place them in your attributes (which give actions to change dice around). You buy gear, skills and traits from a market, and try to make the best character you can. Lots of fun and has a 'puzzley' feel to it. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/169426/roll-player

Runebound 3rd edition. This is the closest thing I've found to an RPG, in a board game. You pick a scenario for the overall game (plot things, side quests, and bad guy). Pick and adventurer and go off all around the board/map, fighting monsters, completing quests and/or social encounters to gain gear and powers. Strengthen yourself up enough and you may be tough enough to engage and take down the bad guy. It's not a cooperative game (though that would be great) and there is a time limit. Combat is done with tokens/pogs. I wasn't sure if I'd like that, but I do and I think it works well. It makes combat a little more interactive than just rolling dice. It will take probably 3-4+ hours to play, but it's worth it. It's also rather difficult, I've found. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/181530/runebound-third-edition

Well, the way I see it is:
The main boxed set is a fixed story you follow.
Sure, there's lots of cards and different encounters can happen along the way, but it's essentially the same storyline.
So in order to keep playing the game and keep it fresh, you need to buy expansions, whether it's a full boxed set expansion such as the "Dunwich Horror" or minor (and cheaper) expansions that are smaller storylines.

I did actually replay the boxed set a few times, but the enjoyment of it went down pretty fast for me.
On top of that, if you want to play with someone else (it supports up  to 4 players) , you need to buy an ADDITIONAL main boxed game, due to the way the decks are configured.
That's a BIG investment for something that doesn't even add more storyline.

Upon reflection, I don't think it's really worth it.

I just picked up the full-range of "Run, Fight, or Die!" and it looks like a blast.

Sadly, it seems to be arriving in least-useful to most-useful boxes. The big Mutant token figure and the Zombie Horde Expansion boxes showed up today. Still waiting on the core set and other stuff... Read the core rules as a PDF though, and it looks like its going to be a ton of fun.
You people are idiots. I'm out of here.

Picked up the Dreamwell card game for half off and Unearth, both on a Black Friday sale.

I've been playing a lot of Terraforming Mars - I love it. Just enough interaction to allow you to affect others, but most turns it's best to just carry on with your own plans. And replay value is so far fantastic - I've not seen a "perfect" strategy yet.

I love SW:Rebellion - although I'm no good at it! But it really does feel like you're playing the films (or a reasonable facsimile of them). And turning Chewie (or Leia!) to the dark side is always fun :-)

Eclipse is a terrific game too - great for multiplayer shenanigans, and the individual rules fit together so well. The rules encourage a bit of fighting early on - but not too much (diminishing returns kick in), and you are usually better off improving your tech or building monoliths than trying to conquer another player's territory. You'll leave yourself weak and out of position for a counter-stroke by a third player. I'm really looking forward to the 2nd edition - even if it doesn't really need one.

I do play non-sci-fi games too, but I seem to have been concentrating on these 3 recently

Sound cool spon. Heard a lot about Terraforming Mars but SW: Rebellion appeals more to me and I'm not even that much of a SW fan!

You play a demon worshiping death cult bringing forth the Apocalypse!
But the Demon Lord will only save his most successful cult, everyone else perishes in flames.
The rules are a combo of Dominion (deck builder) and Risk (war for territory).

Police Precinct as it was inexplicably on sale for just 20$ on amazon for no known reason. Even the designer was mystified as its a 70$ game.

Playtesting a few games for contests and picked up the PNP version of Unbroken, a sort of fantasy exploration/survival board game, as the publisher released a full PNP version as it nears its release date. Also released a Tabletop Simulator mod. Also nabbed the PNP redesign of the old magazine train game 1800 that the designer released. Also playtesting a new RPG that uses elements of Dungeon World and Mythic called Ironsworn. Its set up for traditional GMed play, small group GM-less play or even solo play and comes with a simple oracle system to emulate a GM.

7 wonders is a very well desgined game.  Its one of the only games I know that is even playable with 5 or more players and it handles 7 no problem.

Playing sythe the for the first time today. Looking forward too it.

Played terraforming Mars, I like it.

I really like evolution.

As always Tirgirs and Euphrates is a great game.

You've played with five to seven people? For six people, were there just two teams of three? And each team make a decision on moving their civilization forward?

Enjoy Scythe! Are you starting it blind, or do you have some previous knowledge?

7 wonders was a 3 - 7 player game before they made 7 Wonders duel.  It plays different but similar.

Never played sythe before.  The guy who taught me is a huge fan.  He went to a con in Ohio (?) and played secret Hitler with the creator.

There were 3 of us, we played three games.  It was quit good.  I really like how quick and simple the turns are.
