Title: Baldurs Gate 3 trailer
Post by: Shasarak on February 29, 2020, 12:52:00 AM
Just because there are some dummies writing some dumb stuff about the Planes, here is a kick ass trailer from Baldurs Gate 3 who do Mind Flayers and Githyanki right, not like the dumb way other people do them.

Fair to middling. I'll be buying it!

Loved the cinematic trailer! Thank you Shasharak!

But the gameplay video was really weak.

I never buy games based on their FMV trailers.

Nice to see that spelljammer still exists.

OMG, OMG! A freaking Nautilod!

I didn't know those ship's tentacles could move and teleport people they touched, though. So many dragon riders too. Someone took a lot of artistic licence.

Great cinematic. I wish the game was all about that, Githyanki hunting parties searching Illithids across dimensions. But sadly, this is probably just background story for ye olde elf, dwarf, human and gnome boring medievalesque party.

Nautiloids dont have articulate tentacles, or that many even. So guessing its some sort of Illithid infested Kracken.

The dragon riders are the Githyanki who ride dragons into battle against the mind flayers.

Well kudos for ideas outside the box and a good example of D&D creativity in general.

Githyanki
IMC have always been high level 10+ encounters though, Starting characters at first level with Githyanki and intellect devourers and mindflayers seems a tad unbalanced. The railroad, of course, starts right at the beginning with the characters being infected by illithid spawn in a deux ex machina plot device setting up time constraints to uncover the entire plot and storyline before the character is irretrievably destroyed. I find it much preferable to setup a story line, and then let the players choose how to proceed, In the above example, I would make a play on the characters greed, ambition, or avarice and let them be tempted by some macguffin, only to find the angry spawning illithid. Two things with this, it's the players idea to get involved ...and everything is their fault, because none of it would have happened if they weren't so greedy/ambitious/hostile.

That said, the graphics for the game levels look reeeally good, and I like how they have picked up on utilizing more mechanics such as hide in shadows for thieves, along with a destructible environment making exploration much more interesting. All in all, so far i would rate it about a 6/10. Pretty sure the designers are going to go hog wild on the environmental variables, but almost completely ignore the transplanar elements. I wasn't impressed with the Githyanki though. They looked more like elves, and are much less mean looking than the classic Githyanki from Fiend Folio. All you had to do was just see one of those, and you knew there was going to be trouble. I didn't get the vibe from the Elfin cutekin here.

I'll be really impressed the day computer game designers come up with a working system so that wizards can create brand new spells, and new types of spells, by recombining existing spells. In the Diablo series they actually did this with magic items, and it greatly enhanced the game. I wanted to continually quest in that game to get better magic items and spell components to make better magic items.

The Half-Diablo's of course.

Diversity reigns in the Realms these days!

The first two minutes or so are indistinguishable from most SCi-Fi or suprehero themed crap already out there.

And then they go "plane" hopping like stargate...

This is just further proof that D&D lost me as its target audience a long time ago.

And WOTC doesn't miss my $$ even one little bit!

Unless they are continuing the Bhaalspawn storyline, I have zero interest in this game.

Baldurs 3 will have turn based combat.

How do you feel about that change? To me, that's a bonus (if done well).

The only way to fly. I can't stand real-time combat for party-based games.

Interesting video. For me it bordered on the horror-film genre, particularly the scene with the worms being shoved into the character's eyes. I hope the game will have the same epic feeling that BG 1 and BG 2 had. It sounds good to me that the game will feature turn-based combat, just like my game Knights of the Chalice 2 (please see the Kickstarter campaign to be launched on 26 May).

Will it be an early access or a full release, any ideas?

It will definitely be in early access, that's been announced.

How long I don't know, but D:OS2 was in ea for one year.

The real question is, why were Illithids on Ceti Alpha V?

Clearly they were creating genetically superior super soldiers. Duh.

Color me impressed. Looks much better than original BG games already: true dialogue trees with actual stats checks, turn based combat, interactive environment. Good.

They also got rid of the somewhat awkward *dialogue system with indirect sentences* - it never bothered me much in D:OS but I know quite a few people didn't like it.

I'm still not sold on the game yet.

We've only seen scripted story threads with predetermined characters. The thing I loved about BG is I could make my own character and go where-ever I wanted. Seems like they are going railroad heavy to me with set characters and set paths. Both BG games started that way, so maybe the world opens up. We'll see.

It also looks way too clean... Everyone, even the damn goblins, look like they just stepped out of wardrobe for some C-grade, overly costumed and styled cheese-fest.
