Anyone notice that Baldurs Gate 1 was polished and set to be rereleased tomorow?

A google search of 'baldurs gate enhanced' will find it.

I think its $19.99

2E dnd computer rpg!

I preordered it a while back and its finally arriving.

Patrick

I have never played this- would you recommend PC or iPad?

PC.

I read that they had some bugs on ipad.

My instinct tells me it will run better on pc due to the origional game being many years old.

Maybe check out the official forum for the game tomorrow and see what people are saying.

Ladybird

It's better that it got delayed, than launched with a showstopping crash bug.

I'm considering getting the tablet edition of the game - I already have it on my PC, obviously - because the tablet is a good environment and control system for that style of game (I've got Avernum on my iPad; the touch controls work great, most of the time, and the few problems are ones I had on the PC version as well).

Hardware requirements-wise, though, it's ancient - anything that can run it, shouldn't have any problems with it.

Oh.fucking.dear. More like: Baldur's Gate: The slipshod edition

As the official forum for the game are like a clone of TBP, full of mumpsimus individuals, I just thought I'd post some sense here.

Firstly, I know lots of people have had issues installing and downloading the thing in the first place. I didn't BUT I did have to find the folder for the game and rejig a few things for it to work. Ergo, amatuer at best.

Secondly, the game runs fine; that is 50% of the time. Go to the official forums and you will see a plethora of bugs and other fuck ups. One of my particular favourite bugs (that I can't see mentioned) means that none of the hot-keys work and that you can't select individual party members! While this does make the game extra challenging, it also makes it unplayable! Also, this has nothing to do with, system settings, graphic cards or whatever. Nor does this occur when running the old version of BG1 WITH mods! Ergo, worse than amatuer.

Thirdly, if you have ever played BG1 using mods, available for free you perhaps have enjoyed a bug free, graphically improved version using the BGII engine. Not so here. The interface looks like it has been drawn using Microsoft paint at a low-res. Indeed, further examples can be seen of this. Visit a tavern and you can see what look like badly 'photoshoped' images of various rooms (Peasant, Merchant etc), indeed I think Paint Dubuas is the actual filter. Awful!

Now there are people moaning about the replaced 'cartoonish' movies. I actually don't mind them, they work for me! There are also some improvements like action icons being displayed alongside the character portraits. Now, I didn't want a nostalgic trip to memory lane, and nor is BG something that I worship; I like change that is why I fancied playing an 'enhanced edition'! However, I have played BG on and off since it came out with and without mods so I do have some experience. With that, I just wanted a game that fucking works.

So, don't suggest a game is enhanced when overall it is far from being enhanced. Furthermore, do not charge for it and then make people believe it is their fault for not being computer programmers or full-on nerds as per the official forums for not being able to install the thing; that is your job Beamdog! Indeed it sounds like you have either sold a product that you know that is not enhanced or that you are just incompetent; or both.

That really does sound somewhat crap, especially with the originals available on PC for a similar price (And moddable into a similar experience).

I still want to see what people say about the tablet version, but the PC edition certainly sounds disappointing.

I can select individual party members, hotkeys work, and have yet to see any bugs.

Still in the early stages of the game.

I am playing on PC.

Is it possible the ipad version is buggy?

It hasn't been released on ipad yet as it failed to pass Apple's test; i.e. too many bugs! And, if the PC version is anything to go by then I can't see it being passed anytime soon.

Take a look a their site (http://forum.baldursgate.com/). There are lots of problems. However, one thing that is causing hostilities is that for some people (like yourself) it seemingly works ok. For others, such as myself, it is terrible. Anyway, I've asked for a refund. I don't mind the odd glitch or bug but I can't f-ing play it without experiencing extreme frustration!

There is this review here that sums it up for me: http://www.gamebanshee.com/reviews/110209-baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-review.html

Certainly they should give you a refund.

Perhaps they will patch it in a timely manner.

I wonder why it works on some pc's and not others?

Lynn

What a shame. Im guessing that from the fuzzy graphics statements that they didn't redraw, but instead tried to upsize a lot of the original content.

What would be nice is if they repolished an updated, cross platform Infinity Engine and then license it in a few ways that would allow all those modders to release their own games.

Obsidian is making a brand new rpg in the style of baldurs; etc...

Probably take two years though to finish.

Yes, looking forward to that!! It looks and sounds great already..

I think that's what Beamdog wanted to do with a possible Baldur's gate 3. I also think that is why so many people, who are pro the enhanced attempt, are having hissy-fits on their forums; with it being a mess it is unlikely to happen!

They (Beamdog) should have done a kickstarter for a true revamped Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, with extra rules from 2nd Edition more kits, extra adventures, whatever. Then off the back off that try for a 3rd; also with kickstarter. It would have been a lot more successful imo, of course and they would have had funds upfront. They should have also done research on what they could actually do beforehand, and before announcing things. I hear they couldn't find (at Bioware) the original animations, thus making it impossible to update them. Did they not ask first? Also, the multi-player they advertised as working cross-platform; at the moment it doesn't even work for a single PC let alone across multiple PCs! Shame really.

It gives me a reason to play baldurs gate again.

I'll probably end up playing baldurs gate 2 before beamgog has time to enhance it.

Then hope the obsidian game is out :)

I've heard elsewhere that the IE codebase is a mess, internally, and proper archival of video games is still not something many studios bother with even today. Someone may probably be better off coding their 2D RPG engine from scratch.
