This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Neat. I picked up the D&D anthology collection for pc at a game store a couple of years ago. Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale were some of my first exposures to D&D.

Yay! I got it. Sucking me in again. Scary how it did that.
Also, really, was it this HARD before?

...and of course I didn't look at Steam at all this past weekend.

Figures.

I had the same reaction. I recently got the 'enhanced' edition and I died a lot.

Really lot.

Save or die, and generally low hp, is brutal.

Fun, but unforgiving!

It's also one reason I enjoy 1E dnd more than 3X/4E.

More danger built into the system.

I never actually survived past getting to the second town.

I've been through the mines at this point. I did stuff out of order, I'm pretty sure. (At least what people consider optimal playthrough) and I'm playing via Core Rules difficulty. Still its taken a LOT of reloads, thanks to sudden critical which instagib some of my casters.

I had major issues just getting to the first town from Candlekeep.  That group that you and Imoen meet up with just outside can wipe you out very quickly.  Once I passed that fight, it was a bit easier.

Yeah, that's the one I meant, I was counting the wizard tower at the start as a town.

I've only even made it to that inn once, usually I would get killed by the fucking ogre that wanders the plain between, and often miss the party you're supposed to meet in between. The one time I made it to the inn, some guy ran out and one shotted me and the game was over.

Yeah, that game reacquainted me with the "save before the encounter" strategy.

I rerolled after my first trip through the mines.  Second go was a dual class fighter wizard. Went solo so I didn't have to split the XP.  Three levels of Wizard solo meant a LOT of saving and loading...

Failed.

Earlier this year, I picked up a bunch of these from GOG for ~$20.

The really hard part about BG that I hate is the ambushes while traveling between areas in the wilderness.  Somehow, you're supposed to be so oblivious while travelling that you have 4 creatures 20' from you, one in each direction before you notice?

And when you're done with it BGII is out with a new "enhanced" version
