August painting thread.

I have the owlbear from the "chainmail" game sitting around somewhere. Maybe I'll pull it out when I need a break from endless guardsmen :)

On that note I finished blocking the rest of the IG squad. Tomorrow morning will be inking, highlighting and basing (hopefully).

Heh. The two on my workbench are indeed sculpts from chainmail. :)

Best owlbears evar IMHO. I have one started in traditional colors and the second one I'm doing as a white owl/polar bear version on an arctic base.

The best Owlbears I have ever seen are the Great Horned Owlbear from Kenzer & Co, now sadly out of production, and the recent Otherworld Miniatures Owlbear.  Both of those look almost exactly like the owlbear in the first illustration in B2 Keep on the Borderlands.

That is a very nice one.  I'm not a huge fan of the Bones owlbear.  The only other owlbear mini I have is the old Ral Partha one

D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Reaper, in my opinion, has never done a "proper" owlbear - two of 'em have serious Jazz Hands and the third one...ugh, I just donno what's going on with him with that leg up by where his head should be and all.  Maybe it's just a bad photo on their website but it looks terrible.

That Partha sculpt is pretty OK tho!

Yay! First Contubernium is done!

Hopefully I'll get the next unit assembled and primed tomorrow.

I'm not fond of doing bases so I went with the traditional "I'm standing on the front lawn" look.

If anyone comments I'll just say its "retro" and I enjoy it ironically :p

General question.

How does everyone seal/varnish?

I'm temped to use a hard varnish followed by a matte sealant to take the shine off but it's a couple extra steps.

Reaper brush-on sealer.  It's semi-gloss so it doesn't quash metals, nor does it make non-metals all slick and shiny.  I can control exactly how it goes on, get it everywhere I need to with a brush, and reapply it in just those trouble spots if I see wear happening.

AP Quickshade Strong Tone. I don't dip, but I lather every model in it. I used an ultra-Matt primer which offsets the glossy look varnishes sometimes give. I talk to a lot of guys online that just use varnish from the hardware store and then go over it with Testors dullcoat.

In a day or so, I'm starting this figure:

I'll be removing him from his base and mounting him on a beveled 30mm base instead, for better use of flock and so forth.  The character is a ranger, so I'll use some static grass and so on.

Probably lots of greens and browns, you know, woodland colors...

Second squad done.

I like the bases a lot more, I think I'll go back and adjust the old greenies.

Still no marine bits so it looks like I'll start another IG squad this weekend.

EDIT: Crap. Somehow forgot the yellow eagles, etc... Grrrr...
