August painting thread.

I stole this idea from the Privateer Press forums.

What to post:

Your plans for the month.

Progress pics.

Finished pics.

Advice/suggestions for painting.

For me I'm currently building a 40k imperial guard army with a marine detachment.

I just finished "test models" and am pretty happy.

So moving forward I'm pretty slow so currently I would like to get an IG infantry platoon done by the end of the month. Three squads and a command unit.

I'm waiting on a bunch of bits I ordered to do more marines so I can't promise I won't get distracted from the guard to do those this month instead :D

What about you guys? What have you got on the table?

10 years ago, I'd have been all over this thread. Sadly, I don't own any paint anymore, and certainly no 40k models. I had a lot of fun when I was playing, though.

I did a Nurgle army in bone white with green highlights, along with lots of mutations. I wish I still had the pics for them. My dreadnaught had a big tyranid arm, for example. I also used zombie heads for some of the marines.

Faces are very nice. Do you use a wash or is that blending?

Wash. I can't blend flesh tones to save my life.

First, I love this thread idea.

Secondly, I'm not that great of a painter, so don't expect professional quality ;)
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

I hear you. Army Painter Quickshades are my saving grace.

I just started my Skaven army from IoB, haven't painted a mini since 98, and I've never worked with plastic before. Finished my first tester last night ( except for the base, haven't picked up any sand/ fake grass yet). Here's a crappy cellphone pic:

Needless to say, yours look much better.

I plan to do 5 a day after this until the regiments are done, and hopefully that will be enough practice to do a decent job on individual characters. Goal is enough for a 500 pt battle by the end of the month.

Ok, here are the three bones ones I'm working on now.  Sorry they aren't from the very beginning, but I haven't done much on any of them.

All I did for the werewolf was do a quick base coat for flesh (black) and fur (grey).  Then I did a quick dry brush on each and that's it.  Haven't done any detail work yet.

The owlbear is more complete, but I haven't done the details or the drybrushing for the lighter feathered areas.

And the earth elemental is just a basecoat.

My typical process is:

Basecoat
Inking/Wash
Drybrush
Detail

That's some very nice dry-brushing on that owlbear

Looking good guys :)

I just got the rest of the IG squad assembled and primed (the models are a pain in the ass to clean and assemble, BTW).

I'll start some blocking today if they dry quick enough.

I really need to do some more painting. I got tons of figures that could do with it. Perhaps I'll be inspired by this thread to get the brushes out again.

You should!

Finished 5 more Skaven yesterday (only 120 + Doomwheel to go lol), will throw up pics when I get home. I'm keeping my sanity by doing a very simple approach on rank and file ( primer, base colours, touch ups, quickshade) and not striving for perfection, though of the 5 I'm nominating one figure to put a bit of extra work into (these will make up the front line of the unit).

Got five new ones primed for today this morning.

Question for experienced painters: do you assemble first then paint your minis or will you paint arms/shields/heads etc separately?

I assemble first, unless it's a piece that really can't be painted otherwise.  For example, in the Clockwork dragon, I only have one wing assembled.  I'll paint the other separately and then glue on because if I have them both on, it's too hard to do a good job.

Same. Yeah, it's "better" to paint first but the pain in the ass isn't worth it for 'table quality' stuff IMO.
