OK, here are the updates.  Shame the flash washed out some of the detail, but what are you gonna do?

D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Technically cheating:

Started a couple months ago after a few aborted attempts that ended with him in Simple Green.

First thing I did was saw him off of his Reaper Broccoli base, then I pinned him onto a solid resin Secret Weapons Miniatures "Ruined Temple" base.

Primed white.

Used Reaper paints exclusively.

The main reason; I am very messy when working with glue, putty, epoxy, etc. Nothing quite like painting separate pieces beautifully then getting glue all over part of it, and realizing you need to putty in some cracks because it didn't fit together perfectly.

Another reason; if the area is so obscured by another piece that it can't be painted easily then it also probably isn't very visible so blocking it in with a dark shadow color will look fine in most cases.

It's hard for me to come to grips with this.  I know that unpainted bit is sitting back there, behind that shield/robe/gun-barrel/helmet - mocking me!

:p when I prime black I go with the old "if you can't see if from across the table it doesn't exist."

:p Its not unpainted. It is painted a dark color. Does it make sense to highlight deep shadows with bright color?  Same principle.

Thats how I rationalize it anyhow.

Yeah, getting into painting minis again ( and the sheer volume of Skaven I have to get through -  40 Slaves,  40 Clanrats, 3 Rat-Ogres, 2 Warlock Engineers,  A Packmaster & A Master Mouldering, 6 Giant Rats, 4 weapons teams - 2 Poison Globe Mortars & 2 Warpfire Canons, 1Warlord, 1 Warlord riding a Bonebreaker Conversion, 1 Assassin, and a Doomwheel. And 1 month to complete it), one of the mantras I've adopted is " good enough from  3 ft", meaning if I can't see any imperfections from 3 feet away it's done. This is just in regards to my rank and file, I'll hopefully have them done by the end of this weekend, and I'll be able to indulge my OCD perfectionist mode again on the characters. Obviously this is pretty much the same as the aforementioned " if you can't see it from across the tabletop...".

I've got a very simple colour palate I'm working with for the troops (ultra-Matt black primer, vermin brown, dwarf flesh, military green, mechendrite red, and gunmetal grey) and I've got a pretty streamlined formula: primer, bases, details, then AP Quickshade Strong Tone over the whole model, and then touch- ups as necessary the next day. Did 1 tester the first day, 5 test batches the next 2 days and plan on 10 from today until finished, as I'm satisfied I've got the kinks out.

I'll have pics soon.

Ok, here is the final update for the earth elemental.  Still some work to clean up the base, but for the most part it's done.  From the previous pic, this one includes the details, with some touch up drybrushing

I have hundreds of minis backlogged. The bones box is just a little part of that. There are some that are calling out to me and this is one of them.

Yeah, I was anxious to paint him.  And the other tree elemental as well.

Feathers are not too difficult provided the sculpt is well done. For easy feathers, the trick is a really light colored basecoat and a well thinned dark wash, repeating the wash a few times after drying.


....and patience. Lots of patience.

This weekend I will try get around to snapping some pics of a couple owlbears I'm currently working on. Hopefully the pics will show what I'm talking about.
