Title: Assuming you play MMORPGs...
Post by: ancientgamer on January 25, 2008, 06:28:06 PM
I have played various ones in the past and right now, I am playing CoH/CoV.  I was wondering what this crowd was into...Of course, I can't list every game, so I'll list some of the better known ones.

I play Twelve Sky on the side from time to time.  It's a good time waster with some social interaction thrown in there.  I do a lot of standing around talking to people on it.  Plus the PvP is done in a pretty decent way to make it interesting when it happens.

I just subscribed to Lord of the Rings Online a few days ago.

Let me know how that goes Pete.

Peteramthor:  I will have to admit that I haven't heard of Twelve Sky.  Is it free to check out or any special requirements?

I was playing LOTRO for a while.  It's pretty darn cool really, I like that they changed up the classes a bit from the usual MMO dross.

But, well, my budget's tight right now, and I've been spending more time with Steam and Civ4 anyway, so I suspended it until later.

LOTRO was very fun, beautiful, I enjoyed it immensly but I found soloing at higher levels was not easy, and generally I'm not always able to play at the time of a group I'd want to play with. (That is a good community group I enjoy) so I found myself playing once a week and stopped it.

I continued with CoX an still have an account but am playing it less and less.  Simply because I've played it for three years and some odd months without significant breaks (more than a few days) but now just am wanting to do something else.

I recently started playing Phantasy Star Universe on Xbox 360 and managed to hook a few friends, as long as they play, I'll play for a bit (lots and lots of grinding,  but to be fair its actually one of the few "SF" themed games that isn't onerous. ( *cough cough Eve* I want to play people or a facsimile theroff, not "The Ship Who Whines", and sure PSU is more light space opera with fantasy trappings, but its fun enough )

Tabula Rasa was neat, but it felt the same as most MMORPGs and the non instancing in beta (and wait line for various quest actions) were a pain, if that's improved it might be worth trying again.

Until then *shrugs* I can't stand WOW (despite loving LOTR Online, somethng to be said for doing things "right" with the feel. Mind you I don't mind the somewhat He-man eaque visualizations of WOW, I just don't like the gameplay all that much)

I found WoW just programmed to be needlessly tedious. Had they made mounts more reaily available it would have gone a long way to making it more enjoyable. But traipsing around in it was too much for me. I also don't think there are anywhere near enough quests and most of them are subjectively balanced.

Plus the setting is just silly :D

It's free from aeria games.

It's mostly oriental themed, also it's a Korean MMORPG but the grind isn't as bad as others that I've heard about.

Currently City Of Heroes.  I keep leaving it, but I keep coming back.  :)  It's the only MMO that my friends play reliably, allows for both easy teaming and soloing and is the most casual friendly.

I have played to some extent:
WoW, Guild Wars, EVE, EQ2, LoTR, Earth & Beyond, Shadowbane and Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Although I think MMOs are overall pretty subpar games, they do offer access to online gaming with my friends around the country.

I was all about Guild Wars, but I've played World of Warcraft (which I found boring as fuck), the LotR beta (which was cool) and Eve (which I liked for a week, then got bord of it). I took Guild Wars out when I got a new hard drive and haven't put it back in yet ( I have Prophecies and Nightfall): while I dig MMOs, they're just not as much fun as regular single player games or FPS.

Also: I hate grinding.
