Arkham City Help!

So, I'm trying to find Ra's al Ghul, and you have to do this stupid gliding thing.

Now, I've been gliding all over the place, doing the AR training and all that jazz.

But the one thing my Batman does not do when he's gliding is GAIN FUCKING ALTITUDE.

WHich, you know... makes sense. He's gliding with a cape and all that.

ONly, and mind you, I can't just walk away from this mission since a: I'm stuck in it and b: even if I wasn't I've got, literally, no health left and c:its part of the main fucking chain.

Anyway, on the very second glide section of this mission I have to...

...

GAIN FUCKING ALTITUDE.

Not once, by like, three times in the same flight, non-stop.

SInce I seem to be the only asshole in the world who can't make batman fly higher just by following the simple fucking instructions of the game... maybe someone here who's played it a few times could tell me what in the fuck I"m doing wrong.

'Cause you know what my batman does after dive bombing? He levels out and starts to fall again, like a normal fucking glider.

ANd, as you can tell, I'm frustrated. Not like "Rage" Frustrated, where I just said fuck it, the driving isn't cool but the game ain't that fun... no, I really do like the game. So this one stoppage (and this is my second run through the game ending here, fifty to a hundred fucking attempts at this one simple fucking gliding mission that doesn't seem to cause any other of the million fucking people who have played hte game any trouble worth a shit.

SO yeah, thanks. I'd like to return to enjoying my game... if you know something, or know someone who knows something, please... do tell.

You have to divebomb for a bit and then pull up (right-trigger and pull back on the joystick thing).  It took me a couple of tries but I managed to get it eventually.

Y'know, I've learned something from this thread. Both B.T. and Koltar are idiots, but whereas B.T. possesses a malign intelligence, Koltar is just a drooling fuckwit.

So, that's something, I guess.

It's been explained to you how it works. All you do is pull up when diving and you will gain altitude proportionately to the speed and depth of your dive.
“Ghost Whistler” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

having played a whole extra game of Arkham City (three, by the way... all ending essentially at Ra's al Ghul part of the main mission), I finally determined the one piece of advice that not a single person ever felt necessary to give... in the game or on line.

Aparrently, if you Dive Bomb, there is a rushing 'effect' when you've 'bombed' far enough. If you see that THEN pull up you rise, if you pull up earlier you don't.

Simple. Yet utterly lacking in any of the help I found.

What makes it particularly relevant here, is that you NEED the dive bomb effect to beat the stage at all, and two: Following the white line, the way people tells you, results in too short of a dive bomb.  Seriously, I dove about 50% farther than the line went 'down' before I got it right. Obviously, if 'altitude' is a problem you're going to be a bit conservative with it, yes?

Also: (Spoiler):

SPOILER (Hover over section below to view.)

Why the double fudge does the Batman carry the Joker's body out at the end?  I mean, I know he's not really inclined to murderize the bastard, but that just seemed oddly reverential... for a homicidal madman/stalker in your vigilante's life.

The ending was shit anyway, so don't think too much on it.

I wasn't actually surprised, having accidentally stumbled on the controversy and an interview of same while looking up how to play the game (secrets learned: Explosive gel triggers riddle traps! A-ha! Now I know how to defeat about fifty of the fuckers that were utterly beating me!  Second secret: Wall mounted pressure switches don't actually need you to keep pressure ON them... usually you just can't touch anythign else but another switch instead. Seriously! THis shit should be at least partially explained. I dont have weird pressure switch traps all over my real world to show me what does and doesn't work on them...)...

I sort of agreed with the designer's ideas. But aside from what I already mentioned there was the WTF of the Batman's speech up to the... Spoiler.  Totally at odds with what he says after, totally at odds with his ethos to even dwell on it that way.

Though I did think they did a good job bringing in all those various rogue's gallery  without bogging the game down into random boss fights of utterly shit plotting... which is saying something as there are two distinct and largely unrelated main plots going at the same time!

That takes stones to write without making a fucking mess of it.

EDIT::: Explaination for twin plot comment under spoiler tag

SPOILER (Hover over section below to view.)

The main plot, ironically given that it ends 'sooner' in the chain, is Ra's Al Ghul's testing of Batman through Hugo Strange and Arkham City.  Irony means you actually hunt RaG during the second plot, not the first.

The Second plot is the Joker's dying due to the Titan Formula, and his blackmail of Batman into finding the cure, both for himself and for everyone else. This is seperate. RaG doesn't care about the joker, Strange is only using him as part of the Arkham City 'experiment' to wipe out crime in a mass genocide to prove he's better than Batman as a candidate, etc. Strange didn't poison the JOker or Batman or the hospital blood supplies, and neither he nor RaG care about what the Joker is or isn't doing.

The Joker plot feels more central to the game, and in terms of missions it totally is. You spend a LOT more time dealing with the Joker's mess. But as the entire setting is driven by the creation of Arkham City as a prison and who/how Hugo Strange pulled it off, the joker mess really is a distraction for what Batman is actually doing in AC.  Joker gets more screen time for his plot because, well, he's the fucking Joker and Hugo Strange is just some dude with glasses and  lab coat. He's a pawn, and for most fans of Batman, the Joker is the villain they can name and RaG is just some random dude that turned up in the Nolan Batmans (he's not, but seriously: I learned of him in the animated shit in the mid nineties, twenty odd years after his introduction, and I'm a comic geek...)

I was annoyed about one of the Catwoman sections. Oh, spoiler tags, why not.

SPOILER (Hover over section below to view.)

There's one Catwoman mission where you have to break into a vault to get a plant for Ivy. So you go in, stealth-kill some men, get the plant... and then Catwoman sees Batman under a pile of rubble, and the player is given the choice as to whether Catwoman leaves Arkham City, or rescues Batman. Catwoman weighs up the pros and cons of each choice, but it's up to the player to choose. Door Freedom or Door Batman.

If you leave the city, you get a credits scene, overlaid with news reports as the villains break out of the city. It's very much a Bad Ending... except it isn't. Because at the end of it, it rewinds, like a VCR, back to Catwoman seeing Batman trapped.

This pissed me off, because it was the only real "choice" the game offered me in the storyline, and it didn't have the balls to follow through with it. As you can probably guess, I had Catwoman leave; she'd got what she came for, and Batman can save himself. But this was a choice I wasn't allowed to pick.

What I felt should have happened was, the game should have fully went with it as an ending; credits roll, voiceover, cut back to the main menu, unlock some stuff (Maybe not as much as getting the proper ending)... and then the "Continue game" option takes you back to the vault, in the same way that option always does. It lets the player have the choice, make it, and see the consequences of it; erasing it through "continue game", a choice the player gets to make. But what they did simply tells the player "you don't get to make any choices here. Pick the fucking Batman door already".

It's totally a minor issue in what is otherwise a great game, though! I preferred Asylum, but City's a great followup.

Unfortunately I'm playing in a third world country with a hacked x-box... so no DLC for me... thus no Catwoman.

Other than that, I have to agree, that did suck.  I can see the designer's delimma, however. The game continues after Batman 'wins' so you can enjoy all the side missions... even though it doesn't make much sense story wise.

Likewise: If your choice ended the game then... how do you go back and enjoy the rest of it? As players we WANT to be in Arkham City, obviously. We paid good money to be there! Totally at odds with teh characters, who generally don't... (other than batman, I guess...)

I liked Catwoman, because she doesn't have a gadget for every occasion I found myself having to think about her sections much more than Batman.

Here's a link, apologies for linking to an IGN video.

Like I said, I'd probably have rolled it into the "continue game" option. The dialogue should be enough of a clue that this isn't the "good" ending, and like you said, the players will want to finish it! Maybe have Catwoman make a snide remark about it after you continue, and have her go straight to the "rescue Bruce" option (Because there's no point in giving the player the same "failure" option in the same context again).

I must go back and play more Arkham City! I got to the end (PC), but then ran into assignments and Saints Row 3 came out, so there's still a bunch of side content I haven't done.

Funnily enough, Arkham City has been distracting me from Skyrim (I NEVER beat these games... I just explore and sidequest endlessly, levelling unto godlike levels of power.... Seriously, i'm level 50, kitted out with a dozen artifacts, have maxxed out several shouts, with dragon souls to burn..... and I'm only in act 2 of the main plot????)
