I just posted
an update about the project, and I was reminded of the whole "this is a gamebook: does it belong with RPG's or not?" topic.
In that Yahoo gamebooks group (thanks, Age of Fable), there is a thread going about how people approach gamebooks: is it generally roleplayers who play gamebooks? Or general book-reading types? Or what?
So the present thread has been moved into "Other Games," and I suppose that's fine, but this isn't the whole of it. In
another forum I frequent (any fans of
http://Card Hunter here? The original Thief videogames? Magic: The Gathering?), someone used our game download to introduce his wife to roleplaying games. He explained it made the experience less overwhelming: the players and the "GM" (the book) had clear characterization written out on the page, so motivation and questions of "what WOULD I do?" were right there for you to see. Further, explicit limitations on choice helped fight "analysis paralysis" for the new player.
Elsewhere on the internet, people have talked about using a solo adventure in your RPG rulebook to introduce players to game concepts. Anyone here play the original "red box" D&D? (And I mean
original.) Anyone here meet Aleena? Seek vengeance on Bargle the Infamous? I sure did.
So I'd say that the place of "gamebooks" among "RPG's" is subject to consideration.
