Fallout 3 CRPG coming out this Fall

As for me I am still optimistic about this. I trust that Bethesda knows what it is doing., but on the other hand, that may be too optimistic. So we'll see!

I am pumped about the childhood-driven character creation system. The graphics look pretty awesome and it looks to have a hybrid real-time/turn-based combat system in place of the traditional turn-based combat of its predecessors.

So...

What do you all think about the continuation to the Fallout saga due this Fall? Is it going to rock, will it suck? Is Bethesda going to do a good job on it or will it just be Oblivion-with-Guns?

QuoteWhat perspective do I play the game in, first or third-person?
Both. The game is meant to be played first person. However, you can toggle the view with the press of a button/key to an over-the-shoulder view that can be zoomed in/out on your character. Both views are available throughout the entire game.

Hmmm....

They're probably going berzerk about this on NMA. :haw:

The screenshots look great, though.

I think that it will be nothing like actual Fallout except for some set dressing, at worst, or a decent tribute that's still not the same at best.

However, it will still be an excellent game, and lots of fun, and ultimately, I'm willing to give it a chance, after seeing the developers speak about it, and having played about in Oblivion.

I hate to agree with you but I think your words ring true. The Fallout 3 wiki I posted even refers to the game as an "action roleplaying game." Ehhh..

Fallout 1 and 2 were not action RPGs but honest to goodness CRPGS that focused on the "RP" in the word "RPG" as well as combat. Labeling Fallout 3 as an "action RPG" sounds like it is going to play like a Diablo or Icewind Dale.

I keep asking this question once a year:

Are there still any CRPGs being published by anybody?

KOTOR 3?

Obsidian's got a SF game in the works, called Alpha something-or-other, as well as further content for NWN2.  Witcher guys are supposed to be working on an expac I think, as well as some wierd web/email RPG combat game.  Bioware's gone all console though, and are working on some kind of platforming Sonic RPG or some shit.

Actually, Bioware's not gone all console.. YET. They are still working on that long overdue "Dragon Age." It was supposed to come out as early as late last year, but it's been pushed back to as late as April 2009.

Obsidian has just got started working an "Aliens" roleplaying game for both PC and consoles.

It does seem that, overall, the "big developers" are all trying to co-create for both PCs and consoles... If not eventually go into consoles completely and dump PC work altogether..

For my CRPG fix lately, though, I have been playing more of the indie stuff (same with tabletop) like over at Spiderwebsoftware and recently Basilisk Games. The graphics are not up to snuff compared to the big boys, but I do feel that the best CRPGS were done back in the mid to late '90s. Now with the big boys making games for PC as well as console, many of the elements that made PC RPGs great, I fear, are starting to get diluted through "consolization.".. I am starting to see a trend where modern CRPGs are getting less "RPGey" and becoming more and more "action-oriented", like console games. I do hope that I am wrong but Fallout 3 will give some insight into that.

As for a KotOR 3.. Sheesh.. I WISH!

As far as I'm concerned, Dragon Age doesn't exist until I see it on the shelves.  It's a beard.  A puppet project they trot out once a year to try and bank on their former reputation.

They're a console company, that makes console games, that every so often they're kind enough to half-assedly port to the PC six months after release.  Not only that, they merged with a company that makes nothing but console games, and only the occasionally VERY BAD port of a Star Wars title or two every so often.

KOTOR was railroaded console shit, Jade Empire is not even an RPG, MAss Effect is a bloody console shooter, and now they're making a bloody Sonic game, despite having claimed previously that they were done with licensed properties, as an excuse to duck out of D&D.

Hey, KOTOR 1 was fun!

Good, clean fun, but fun nonetheless.

I played it two and a half times. The half time was as an evul PC. Just. Couldn't. Do. It.

Although I share many of the same concerns as J Arcane does regarding the CRPG industry, I have to agree with Pierce that KotOR was a damn good game (the second one , not so much).

Sure it had some "consolization" going on (particularly the dramatic JRPG-style cut scenes), but I thought it still had enough PC RPG elements to sit comfortably within the PC RPG camp.

Goodie goodie :D

The only problem I had with KOTOR 1 was the walking. There was a lot of it. Especially on that waterworld.

KOTOR 2 fixed that, but ruined everything else.

Ehh.. Don't go there.. Or else I will begin my rant on why I don't play MMORPGs..

Anyhow, let's get back on track. Is there anybody that thinks that Fallout 3 will be anything like the first two?
