Anybody Else Like Heroes of Might and Magic?

I do not know how many years ago, but some years back one of my cousins showed me this PC game he had.  It was a turn-based war game slightly along the lines of Civliization, but less ambitious and fantasy-themed.  It also had a map editor included.
This game was Heroes of Might and Magic II.  Basically I like the whole series, including the kind of sort of wonky PS2 version.

Never saw a PS2 version, but I've played and enjoyed the first three in the series.

I think the 4th (?) volume in the series is due out this summer.

I loved these games.  Many lazy nights were wasted playing each title in the series.

If I'm not mistaken, the HoMM 4 came out a few years ago and was not well-received.  HoMM 5 is the one coming out, and it's being done by UbiSoft IIRC.

If you like that, you may also like Age of Wonder.  Same type of thing, big strategic map for normal movement and switches to a tactical map for combat.  You have much more freedom when moving your troops around in combat, though.

I only recommend the first Age of Wonder game.  The later ones (Wizard's Throne and Shadow Magic) weren't as good.

Yeah, when IV came out I didn't have a machine that would run them.  Did any of you ever try any of the differen versions in multiplayer offhand?

edited as Technomancer responded before I did.
