This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Anybody Else Like Heroes of Might and Magic?
« on: April 24, 2006, 06:25:59 PM »
I do not know how many years ago, but some years back one of my cousins showed me this PC game he had.  It was a turn-based war game slightly along the lines of Civliization, but less ambitious and fantasy-themed.  It also had a map editor included.
This game was Heroes of Might and Magic II.  Basically I like the whole series, including the kind of sort of wonky PS2 version.
In the sphere where I was born
Lived the oldest Gnome I've seen,
And he told us of his days
In the Gnomish Space Marines...

Never saw a PS2 version, but I've played and enjoyed the first three in the series.

I think the 4th (?) volume in the series is due out this summer.

I loved these games.  Many lazy nights were wasted playing each title in the series.

If I'm not mistaken, the HoMM 4 came out a few years ago and was not well-received.  HoMM 5 is the one coming out, and it's being done by UbiSoft IIRC.

If you like that, you may also like Age of Wonder.  Same type of thing, big strategic map for normal movement and switches to a tactical map for combat.  You have much more freedom when moving your troops around in combat, though.

I only recommend the first Age of Wonder game.  The later ones (Wizard's Throne and Shadow Magic) weren't as good.

Multiplayer?

Yeah, when IV came out I didn't have a machine that would run them.  Did any of you ever try any of the differen versions in multiplayer offhand?

edited as Technomancer responded before I did.

Heroes IV looked like it was an almost completely different game from the earlier ones, that could have been a part of it's not being received well.

I don't really remember IV that well at all.    I played the hell out of III though.  Great fun.

I'm still playing it, :)  one of these days I'm going to manage to actually finish one of the champaigns. (and as it's the complete version there are a lot of them)

Heroes 3 was the best of the series. Heroes 4 had some serious buggy issues at first, which turned off some people, and was different enough from the previous games that it turned off even more people.

This is the upcoming Heroes 5.

I liked HOMMIV. My stealth hero was the dog's bollocks. :)

But, yes, it was very different from the earlier games.

I enjoyed HoMM 4, though only after getting all the patches as it was buggy as all hell, it was even more enjoyable though when playing multi players :)

Thanks, that looks like its going to be interesting, do you think they're keeping the resource system the same?

I wouldn't mind if they tweaked things a bit, like Sid Meier's gang does with the Civ series. Otherwise it kinda gets repetitive (same game, prettier graphics).

Who am I kidding, I'll probably get it anyways.
