This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Any Miniature games players out here?
« on: September 09, 2006, 08:10:51 PM »
I'm just wondering.

My favorite games right now are Starship Troopers, GorkaMorka, and All THings Zombie.

Actually, those are just the games I get to play often.  My favorite game ever is Vor: The Maelstrom, followed by Starship Troopers.

I'm not certain I would call myself a miniatures gamer but I do play WarMachine on a weekly basis right now. I am looking at Confrontation right now as an option for a second minis game, but the cost of the figures (beuatiful though they may be) is just out of range of what I'm willing to pay.

I've played a number of GW games in the past, but I'm so slow at painting that by the time I get a usable army painted for say 40K, they've changed editions and made half of my figures obsolete. Thus, I've given up on GW and their current business model.

Have you heard what Mongoose is doing with Starship Troopers? Pre-painted figs, and the quality of the paint jobs doesn't look bad at all. They wont win you any painting contests, but they are far and away above what you get with WizKids and or DreamBlade.

Just some thoughts...

I started miniatures gaming about the same time as I started roleplaying so I've been at it a long time.  I mostly do historical gaming (my favorites tend to be WW2 and modern stuff), but there are a few fantasy and sci fi games that rock my world.  Like most wargamers I have a metric assload of half painted armies and unpainted lead.

Some highlights of what I typically play include:

Historicals
  • Command Decision or Flames of War for WW2.  I have a lot of painted 15mm Soviet and Canadian figures.
  • Volley and Bayonet for early-mid 19th Century stuff.  I have a painted 10mm Austrian army for the 1859 war with France.  The local wargaming group that I play with created a massive global campaign game set in 1860, kind of like Empires in Arms turned up to 11 and with the battles played with miniatures.  It turned out pretty well, considering its ambitious scope.
  • I have been developing my own modern skirmish game to play with my collection of 20mm Brits and Argentines from the Falkland Islands war.  The rules emphasize individual psychology and aggressiveness, and the importance of firepower, particularly automatic weapons fire on these factors.

Historicals
  • Mordheim is one of my all time favorite games.  I have a love-hate relationship with Games Workshop.  Most of their games piss me off on some level, but every once and a while they produce a game that blows me away and makes me what to marry it...OK, not quite but you get what I mean.  Mordheim is one of those games.  Evocotive setting, good rules, solid campaign play, and you'll never need more than about a dozen figs.  The original Space Hulk is another GW game that is top in my book.
  • Full Thrust is IMO the coolest space combat game ever.  I have a load of those old Galoob MicroMachine space ships (Star Wars, Babylon 5) that get a good workout a couple of times a year.

Those are the EXACT SAME reasons I like Gorkamorka and how I feel about GW.

I liked Battlefleet: Gothic, but it was primarily because I loved the models and enjoyed customizing them.  The game play was only so-so and it was always hard to find opponents.

When I joined a tournament at the local gaming shop, mine was the only force that survived the onslaught of the Eldar.  The Eldar player, having literally wiped out every other player in the first round was so surprised by my disciplined tactics (I used a pretty standard box formation with picket/screening ships) that he broke off the attack after losing one of his cruisers (his only loss in the tournament).

Unfortunately, everyone else gave up and the Eldar player refused to play against me again (he took the loss of his one cruiser that poorly).

The attitude of the players is the numer one reason I refuse to play any current GW game.  I also played Gothic, but the only person I enjoyed playing against moved downstate (at the time, I'm much farther down state than he is now).

GorkaMorka is dead and dead.  Supposedly it's coming back, and if it does become a free, living, game like Gothic, I'll continue to play ONLY with those who are not total assholes.

You and I have a mutual friend that you should contact for Battlefleet: Gothic, though the last time I was at his house, he had removed his fleets from his fireplace mantle and Heroscape figures had taken their place.

Of course, getting him to find time to play, now that he has five kids, is something of a challenge...

I should say that he used to play Gothic.  Oh, and there may be some resurrection involved with his RPG.  He mentioned something about starting up regular gaming sessions at a new local game store on Friday nights.

Yes. Mainly Flames of War, Full Thrust, DBA/DBM, Johnny Reb III.

Did some Piquet, used to do Games Workshop, still have BFG, keep the warhammer books for RPG flavor.

I did for a while, but have largely moved on really.

Stargrunt II was probably my favorite.  I just really like the rules a lot, and love how they simulate modern fire combat.  Lots of focus on suppression, makes for tense gameplay, and lots of fun for me.

I rather enjoyed the Lord of the Rings game, but after the devs went and nerfed spellcasters just because one of them had lost a game, I began to realize it was probably going to wind up going the way of 40k before long, and I may as well get out now.

Back in the day I cut my teeth on using Pheonix command with minatures as a purely tactical game. This was roughly the same time my regular group really started up with battletech (on of my first ever non-D&D games, though the confusion of mechwarrior/battletech lingers still...) and I played quite a bit until the clan Invasion. Something about one faction having clearly better toys killed the fun for me.

Nowadays when I play I play mostly Warmachine with some 40k on the side. Like many I just don't have the time to paint enough to really get involved. I'd join the new battletech club that formed at the LGS, but the 'ringleader' is scum.

I don't play with scum, I hunt them in dark alleyways, zap them to death and consume the corpse...
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.
