Does it live up to the hype?
It's fantastic, really.
And thoroughly unique.
One of the very few games I just keep installed on my PC as I come back to it somewhat regularly when I feel like playing a round or two.
It's also one of very few games where you can actually play with random people online and won't have a terrible experience - I think this is mostly due to the facts that a) the game so strongly encourages you to stick somewhat close while also allowing everyone going their own paths (this does make sense once you play the game) and b) the game does give very useful and funny tools for communication (with voice chat being entirely optional, I never use it).
But you can also totally play it alone (you'll get a useful flying NPC robot).
Also, it made this possible:
Played a ton of this with my gaming group over the summer, but it has died off since then. Great fun.
