This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Any boardgamers?

I'm guessing most if not all of us are fans of boardgames as well as rpgs.

My faves:
Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kits 1 and 2 (I don't have 3). The best squad level WW2 game going. Not nearly as complicated at full ASL, and just as much fun.
Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear - Operation Barbarossa with a nice system and beautiful counters and map boards.
World at War: Eisenbach Gap - A what-if where the Russians and Americans duke it out in Germany during the 1980's. Lots of fun.
Settlers of Cataan with Knights and Seafarers - Fun group game.
A Game of Thrones boardgame - Simple rules yet complex strategies to win. Really needs all five players to work well, though.
Diplomacy. I love, love, love this game. Just don't expect your friends to be nice to you. Backstabbing is an art form, and absolutely required if you want to win.
Sword and Board - My blog about BFRPG, S&W, Hi/Lo Heroes, and other games.
Sword & Board: BFRPG Supplement Free pdf. Cheap print version.

I'm a big fan of classics like Risk and Stratego. I play Carcassonne. I enjoyed a few games of Ticket to Ride, recently.
Do uber-classics like Chess or Abalone count too?

I just acquired Cadwallon: City of Thieves for Xmas. I can't wait to play that baby on Friday game nights. :)

I'm not really into boardgames, though I'll play them occasionally (ie. a few times a year) when I'm bored.

The last boardgame I played was Carcasonne.

I like boardgames, but most of my rpg-buddies aren't big on them.

So the only game I play regularly is Carcasonne with the wife, which would be more fun if she let me win once in a while.

I'm also a huge Diplomacy fan but also enjoy newer games like Smallworld, Formula D and Ticket to Ride a lot.

And one day I will track down some people and force them to play that old Greyhawk Wars boardgame I bought some 15 years ago. Full campaign across the Flanaess, oh yes!

Form the group wisely, make sure you share goals and means.
Set norms of table etiquette early on.
Encourage attentive participation and speed of play so the game will stay vibrant!
Allow that the group, milieu and system will from an organic symbiosis.
Most importantly, have fun exploring the possibilities!

Board games are fantastic always loved the classics and was playing them from when I was 4 but it was War of the Ring that showed me hobby games ...

Scrabble
Go
Chess
Backgammon
Campaign
Arkham Horror
all the old school GW games before the Citadel merger - Rogue Trooper, Judge Dredd, Block Mania, Fury of Dracula (would lover to get the new FFG version)
Talisman
Space Hulk
War of the Ring (game that started it all when I was 8)
Blood Royale
Warrior Knights
Excalibur
Supremacy
Mega Supremacy
Risk
Dilomacy
Game of Thrones
Tannhauser

Home brewed boardgames - Irilian (my mate designed it when he was 13), Kabal (I spent years desigining it but it finally morphed into a CCG)

Beniost, I did a playtest of City of thieves at Gencon but I wasn't that impressed,. Let me know if you think its good.

I even have dreams where I am playing board games and then I write all the rules down when I get up :) If I had had a way of making the magnetic peices I needed to play Unity (it's a multi-player abstract strategy game that is a bit like Stratego but through which exposure of peices gives them different move, attack and defense values and you are able to unite peices of different types but that was the bugger because though I tried wood, plaster and mili-puty I couldn't get them to work properly) I would be a millionaire - well okay I wouldn't but I would have a working copy of Unity which was great when I was playing it in my sleep...unless I wasn't sleeping then but I am now of course :)

I'm super into cooperative games - lately Forbidden Island and Castle Panic, but we also play a lot of Pandemic and Shadows Over Camelot around here.

A new game that's knocking us out is the decidedly non-cooperative and awkwardly named Escape From the Aliens in Outer Space, which is utterly fantastic.

Also popular - Bang!, Horse Fever, Ticket to Ride.
Check out Fiasco, "Best RPG" Origins Award nominee, Diana Jones Award and Ennie Judge's Spotlight Award winner. As seen on Tabletop!

Oh yes; when I can play, that is.

Right now, we're getting surprising mileage out of the Lego "Minotaurus," (yes, that is how it is spelled) boardgame which plays much like my old, beloved "Survive!"

The neatest thing 'bout the Lego game is that they say, in the rules, to feel free to modify the game as you wish once you get tired of playing it the way that is set up initially.  Pretty smart of them to promote that type of thinking in the kids.

Having said that, I did have to kind of reign the boy in when he showed me his "Kill the Wampa on the Teleport Level," add-on.
I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

I recently picked up the reissue of Lensman, and it reawakened my love of galactic conquest wargames.

I dig on board games.  I'll just spew out what I remember playing in the last year or so:

Cadwallon: City of Thieves
Ticket to Ride
Descent
A Game of Thrones
Risk
Ninja vs. Ninja
Talisman (Games Workshop variety)
Battlestations (more of an rpg, though)
MB HeroQuest
Monopoly Junior (Disney Princess edition)
