This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

360 or PS3?

Does anyone here have both systems? If so could you give me a short vs review. I plan on buying one or the other in the next month or so because the price of either system is cheaper (or as cheap as) than buying a stand alone HD player and when one format eventually dies I will at least have a good game system.

I don't know much about either of them but I heard that the Wii is absolutely crushing both of them in the US in terms of sales.

Well, personally, I don't care for either.  there's just not enough games for either that I care all that much about, that I won't be able to play on my PC when I pick up my next machine, and I don't care at all about being on the "cutting edge" when it comes to game releases anyway.

I would personally rather have a Wii, because it offers me sometihng I can't get with the PC already.  It's also far cheaper than either of the other two consoles, which puts it more comfortably within any future console budget that does not involve older games and hardware, or handhelds.

However, to provide some less left-field responses, the 360 DOES have far more games at present, while the PS3 has basically nothing really worth buying and costs far more money.

I would also note, on the HD player issue, that the HD-DVD drive for the 360 is a seperate add-on peripheral, and not built-in to the machine.

If backward compatibility is important to you, you're in for a shaky go on either platform.  The 360's works by driver updates for specific games, so not everything is covered yet, and the impression I get is that updates are slow, and likely to cease at some point in the future.  The PS3 on the other hand, while originally released with full hardwar bac-compat for PS1 and PS2, they've been phasing it out with progressive models, first stripping out the PS1 emulation and putting the PS2 in software, and now there's rumors of a "budget" model with none at all.  And as far as I can figure, it's not even necessarily clear on the box which ones are which, so prepare to get burned.  All told, I'd rather have the former.

Ultimately, if forced to choose, I'd say the 360 wins hands down, especially on the games front, because there's simply more selection there.

The Wii is out because it lacks HD capability, I am leaning towards the 360 due to the availability of HD downloads that will be coming to Xbox live later this year, its supposed compatibility with Vista networked computers, and the fact that Sony apparently has blocked the makers of adult entertainment from licensing blue-ray if true might be the death of the blue-ray format.

However the PS3 has some pretty big advantages as well it is getting a $100 price drop this month, more studios are going with blue-ray and the HD player is built in.

I am trying to find non-Fanboy reviews and comparisons of the two systems side by side, but haven't had much luck.

360.

Not to gay out with the MySpace link, but I posed the same question in a MySpace blog. I'm pretty sure anyone can read it (not just members). Some of the answers were pretty decent and informative.

I'd heard of problems with 360, but I think Rock Band is not being made for PS3 or it may not suppot album downlaod.  That will pretty much clinch it for me.

Edit: Rock Band will be both 360 and PS3.  Rumor has it the downloading ability of PS3 leaves much to be desired.

I think for now, Microsoft has the upper hand in the console market. Sony missed the boat with their release and the lackluster number and slate of next-gen titles. With GTA4 being delayed, you might have to wait until next year for that "killer" PS3 app. The 360 has tons more games at the moment, and some intriguing new titles coming as well (like Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata and Mass Effect, for instance).

Still, I like my PS3. It is a very nice machine with a novel architecture (which may be part of the issue with regards to slow release of games) and an easily extensible hard drive. Online access is free, comparable to XBox Live and getting better every update. The PS3 is >95% compatable with PS2 games. To me, this was important because the PS2 game library has way too many interesting games in it... most importantly, all of the excellent Japanese and tactical RPGs.

I think Sony will catch up and the PS3 will contend, but I think it will take 6-12 more months.

So, I would seriously consider a PS3 if:

-- You want to tinker. The hard drive in the PS3 is easily replaced with a SATA drive. There are many websites around talking about installing Linux on the PS3. Also, there was a free SDK made for the PS2 and my guess is, you will see that for the PS3 as well (though I am not certain). It might be fun playing with the cell architecture if such an SDK comes out.

(On the other hand, if you want to make honest to goodness games for your console, then buy an XBox. It runs on the same graphics architecture as your PC and MS has released their XNA game development platform for free.)

-- You like jRPGs and tRGPs. Though there are some games coming out on the XBox, the PS is the hands-down king for this genre of games. You could entertain yourself for years on just the rpgs available for the PS2, and one of the premier developers of tRPGs, Nippon Ichi, just announced Disgaea 3 is coming out on the new platform.

(On the other hand, you could get nearly as much bang for the buck by buying a 360 and a used PS2.)

-- You want a cheap BluRay player.

-- You really, really have a need to have a console that supports 1080P... not that most games support it.

Not sure if that helped,

Japanese RPGs, yes, you pretty much need a PS2 (there aren't actually any out for the PS3, so it's kind of premature to judge it on that).

Western, PC style RPGs, however, the Xbox is king.  There aren't that many in the console space in general, but the ones that have made it are all on Xbox.  Technically I think there's a port coming of Oblivion for PS3, but that's about it.  All of Bioware's most recent games have been on the Xbox platform, the Elder Scrolls games are on the Xbox and 360, and there's also Fable, with Fable 2 on the way sometime in the theoretical future.

I would also note that the 360 can output 1080p, however, it's all upscaled I believe, as there are no games that run it natively.  I have heard however that the scaler in the 360 does a really good job.

I have an HDTV and Wii is still the best out of my Wii and 360. The graphics are not quite up to 360 but they're certainly way better than PS2/Xbox/GameCube. But if you REALLy want the graphics to show off your HDTV....

As of RIGHT NOW there are no games to buy a PS3 for. A friend of mine has had one for 4 months and doesn't own a single game for it (He say's it's a great DVD player!). 360 has quite a few (not tons, but still a few) BioShock is worth owning the system for as is Halo 3, Gears of War,  Geometry Wars, Oblivion. There's also some great games on the horizon: GTAIV, Too Human, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 etc.

In the FUTURE the PS3 will have MGS4, FFXIII, Ratchet and Clank and a bunch of other sure to be awesome games...but until then it's really got nothing spectacular as of now (some decent stuff, like MotorStorm). But...if it's to show off your HDTV, you can't count out the Blu-Ray player, it really is an improvement over DVD, + PS3's DVD upscaling is really good too!

So...the bottom line is....right now I think 360 is a sure win for the games available. The PS3 is pretty much an investment in future fun (which doesn't make any logical sense).

99% of 360 games are rubbish. Though mainly because of the wankers who play online who should all be terminated.

Look my mummy bought me a 360 for christmas and i play it ALL THE FUCKING DAY! Not only that, I scream like a baby when i play online and whine and gloat when i KEEP USING ALL THE CHEESY GLITCHES.

I told my GF not to bother getting me a 360 or a PS3 for the holidays. I told her to get me a good video card for my PC. Besides GTA 4 most of the games I want to play on the 360 are on the PC, and I really hate playing FPS with controllers. They feel too clumsy. I wanted the 360 for Bioshock and Oblivion. Then I remembered that I'm retarded and should just get a better video card and it'd be better.

I'm a 360 guy myself. One of my buddies was asking himself this very question - I pushed him toward a 360, of course, but he ended up with a PS3. After having seen it, I do have to admit it's nice. Heavenly Sword, except for the main character's hair, is pretty awesome.
