While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Pacesetter Horror Rises from the Grave!

Find the announcement and cover sample here.

Goblinoid Games presents CRYPTWORLD, the new official Pacesetter horror RPG! Other than the zombie survival genre horror rpg ROTWORLD, there has not been a Pacesetter horror game in print since the 1980s. CRYPTWORLD scratches and crawls forth from the grave as the direct Pacesetter brand successor to CHILL!

CRYPTWORLD is a Pacesetter System horror game in which you play an investigator of the unexplained. Any kind of horror is possible, from hunting classic monsters to fighting the secret manipulations of interdimensional aliens, and much more! Be an independent hunter of the horrors in the world, or be a member of one of the several organizations provided, each with different motivations.

CRYPTWORLD covers much of the same ground as CHILL, but CRYPTWORLD goes well beyond it and handles many more subgenres of horror. It is a more complete presentation of horror rules, game advice, and creatures from different horror subgenres so that you can play any kind of horror game you prefer. Your characters can be members of one of the several example organizations that investigate the unexplained, rather than be limited to only one organization (i.e. S.A.V.E.). This also means that there is no specific assumed game setting.

Coming late September!

Are the rules the same as the original, or Mayfair edition of CHILL?

The rules use the original system, not the revised Mayfair rules. IMHO the original is a better system, mainly because Mayfair eliminated the Action Table, but in doing so made it more difficult to calculate margin of success. The Action Table is a powerful tool for all sorts of stuff, and is easy to adapt to new situations in play. Some other odd artifacts are in the Mayfair version, leftovers that won't make sense without the logic of the Action Table, like how monsters are assigned abilitiy scores, etc.

Really? I have a terrible prejudice against the old Pacesetter games as cheap and very USA in a lowest common denominator way, but frankly I suspect it's a very unjustified view and I can't even remember why, give I never owned the games or even opened one (weren't they boxed?)

I think you should give it another look, at least at "Chill". The mechanics style is very much of its time. Resolution table and other eighties stuff. But it really is a gem in the rough. So the idea of a new version, in a different name makes me happy. Definitely worth checking out. You can find the old "Chill" out there on the interwebs. Worth the look.

Also of note is that the CHILL boxed set often sells for quite a lot in the used market. You can use CRYPTWORLD with all the original modules, which can usually be found very cheap. I think you can currently get some great deals at the Paizo store for old Pacesetter stuff, also Noble Knight Games.

Being unfamiliar with Chill or Pacesetter, could someone elaborate somewhat more on the system? The game sounds potentially interesting. What sets it apart from other d100 roll-under systems like BRP/CoC and OpenQuest/Renaissance?

Dan Proctor wrote a few blog posts explaining the Pacesetter System and how it works a few years ago when he first purchased the Timemaster RPG and wrote the Rotworld RPG. Here you go: A crash course on the Pacesetter Action Table System:

Pacesetter System Part 1: Intro and Characters

Pacesetter System Part 2: The Action Table

If you need more info, well, the Pacesetter System has been around since 1984, so there are numerous reviews and discussions out there with a Google search.

Sorry didn't see your post till now. Snidermans links explain it pretty well. If your interested in it the $6.47 is a pretty cheap buy in to check it out. Unfortunately due to household budget cutbacks, I have to wait till the end of the week to pick it up.
