This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

New RPG: Fantastic Tails
« on: October 17, 2021, 12:04:52 PM »
I have spent the last year and half or so working on a roleplaying game. I have been a gamer for many years and this is the product of what I have learned as a player and a game master. It's been playtested pretty thoroughly with my friends and we are happy with the result. If you're interested, here's the summary:

Fantastic Tails™ is a fantasy roleplaying game set in the world of Antera, and populated by anthropomorphic animals from numerous species and cultures. Antera is home to powerful magic harnessed into incredible technologies that have improved the quality of life of most of its inhabitants. Great airships carry cargo to gleaming cities, illuminated by magical streetlights and kept clean by automatons and running water. Trains race across tracks than span nations, connecting cities and allowing citizens to travel at amazing speeds.

Not every inhabitant of Antera is so lucky, however. Some struggle for access to these technologies while others suffer from centuries’ old grudges or newer prejudices. In the shadows, criminals provide what goverments may not and with easy magic comes the temptation of Corruption.

This book includes everything you need to run the game, including rules for creating and playing characters, detailed descriptions of the various nations and cultures of Antera, and rules for opposition that characters may encounter in their adventures.

Print a character sheet, make a character, and enjoy the ride!

No relation to the long stalled MMO Antilia right? Though the lost tech angle is reminiscent of the failed Rym setting way back.

What is the system like though?

Is this a Furry RPG or just anthropomorphic? No judgement here, but one of those definitely isn't for me so I'd like to know what I'm getting into.

No relation to any other project, this is an original setting. It’s also just an anthropomorphic adventure game, not a furry rpg.

As for the mechanics, the preview on DriveThruRPG shows some of the core mechanics but the short version is that it uses d8s and you’re looking for results over 6. 1s typically cancel if you’re not trained in a skill but as your training improves it becomes harder (or eventually impossible) to cancel your successes.

The magic system is very flexible, allowing to pick from known effects each time you cast instead of using specific spells.

Fantastic Tails™ is a fantasy roleplaying game set in the world of Antera, and populated by anthropomorphic animals from numerous species and cultures.

Why did you decide to make an anthropomorphic animal RPG? Is there anything in the rules that is unique based on the fact that the characters are animals?

Also, I looked at the preview but couldn't tell ... are the characters human sized or animal sized? IE like Everdell?

I wanted to do something different from the typical elves, dwarves, etc. and I thought anthropomorphic animals would be interesting. They are generally human sized (there is a note in the species section) but since this doesn't really affect gameplay, you could change that for your group without any real consequences.

Sounds rather interesting. Reminds me a bit of "Inherit the Earth."

Well, if it includes intelligent birds and aquatic creatures that would change much about their history and development.

I’m in addition to the anthropomorphic inhabitants (known as the Awakened), regular animals still exist. You may find a zebra blacksmith with pet birds or a fox adventurer riding a pony, for example.

In that regard, yes. Though unlike Narnia the animals aren’t just regular ones that can talk—they’re humanoid, bipedal, and roughly human sized.

Any rules for making your own types of humanoid animals like in TMNT?

Not officially, but there are 50 animal species included in the book.

Could you show a few illustrations of the people in this game, and a few monsters and a scene or two?
