This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Knights of the Dinner Table Live Action Series now being funded on Kickstarter

HOODY-HOO!!! Introducing a new frontier for fans of Knights of the Dinner Table magazine. D20 Entertainment has been granted the license to produce a Live Action Series/Movie of KODT.
That's right! With your help, fans of the comic and geeks of all types will be able to watch the antics of their favorite characters brought to life. B.A. Felton, Bob Herzog, Dave Bozwell, Sara Felton and Brian Van Hoose are all chomping at the bit to jump out of the pages of the comic and onto television, computer and hopefully movie screens. Here's how it went down.
A few months ago, just prior to GenCon, we at Kenzer and Company were approached by an old friend with an interesting proposal. Ken Whitman (D20 Entertainment ) wanted to do a Knights of the Dinner Table webseries.
Now over the years, Jolly, Dave, Steve, and Brian have been approached perhaps a dozen times about doing such a project. From the guy with a video camera and perhaps more ambition than know-how to a few big name animation studios whose names you would immediately recognize.
As tempting as all those offers were, they came to nothing because of one thing:  The Development Team wanted to make sure they had creative input/control. They just weren't willing to take a check and put these beloved characters in the hands of strangers (especially when one studio exec insisted on changing the Knight's background from 'losers' (her words) to teens who were "heroes" in their day to day lives outside the game).
Giving up complete creative control is just something they've been unwilling to do. Unfortunately, most studios weren't willing to negotiate on that point. So, as the years have passed, and offers have come and gone, the likelihood of a KODT film project just seemed to diminish, to the D-Team's disappointment.
Enter D20 Entertainment.
Not only did Ken Whitman agree to the D-Team having creative control on the proposed project, he insisted on it. That got the ball rolling. Now the ball is in your court. If you want to see your beloved Knights (and possibly other KODT characters) come to life for a webseries, or perhaps even a 90-minute movie (depending on funding) then visit D20's Kickstarter site and contribute to the KODT movie project. There are exciting rewards for contributing and finally, the fans of this long-running (more than 200 issues now) comic will have a chance to help make this dream a reality.
Kickstarter ends February 5, 2014, however many unique items will be sold out in a very short time so make sure you get your pledge in early.

I can't support the "gamers as losers" meme. KODT can be very funny, but I would never want to meet any RPGers who were like the fictional characters and thus I'm not thrilled with the general public seeing KODT's characters as representative of RPGers. In Big Bang Theory, the leads are geeks, but successful ones (including an astronaut). They may be social dorkasaurs, but they are geniuses respected in their careers. The KODT crew always seem like losers while gaming and when outside of the game.

gamers as losers? Thousands of KODT readers would certainly disagree with that comment. But to each their own. ;)  To the contrary KODT has helped people understand both gamers and role-playing for over 25 years. A LOT of our readers in fact are significant others and parents who never really ‘got’ the appeal of RPGs until they read KODT. Hell my own parents better understand me because of reading the comic. :) A few years ago an Uncle was visiting at a family gathering and asked what I did. I explained and he gave me a blank look. Then my 80 year old dad explained to him what RPGs were - in a way that was very clear and shocked me. He summed up by saying, “It’s like the way you and I used to play cowboys and indians. They just have rules for it now.”.
Anyway you underestimate the power of humor and how it can endear both the geek culture and the games we play/love to others. I’ve seen it month after month, year after year when parents write in to thank us for helping them understand what thier kids are into.

I think the defensiveness against gamer depictions in media is getting a little too thin skinned lately. Guys it is a comic book, and the characters are likeable. They are also intended to be funny. Character flaws make for funny material. Whether your dealing with geeks or office sales reps.

Looking forward to live action KotDT becoming a reality.

PS: Is that the bastard playing Bob?

Agreed. I hate BBT not because I feel it's Protocols of the Elders of Geekdom, but because I feel like it's How I Met Your Mother/Will & Grace remake, except they rewrote the lines to feature sciency words.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

Great thing about this hobby is the variety. So many styles of play. So many genres of choice. Sometimes as gamers we resent so many choices because we want everyone to play and support OUR game. So it never bothered me if some people don't appreciate the humor of KODT. (to be honest I'm not a Big Bang Theory fan. Not that I don't LIKE it - I've just never seen more than a few episodes).

Kickstarter is great IMO because it literally lets folks vote with thier wallet in a very direct way. So if enough people don't see the merit in the project it doesn't happen.

So far so good fortunately. 17% funded a little over 24 hours in. I'm told that's a good sign.

Quote from: J Arcane;729271This Ken Whitman?

Yep that Ken Whitman -- Ken and I go way back. I'm well aware of his history. But I'm also aware of his personal journey and his efforts to make amends and become a better person. I'm a big believer and giving people room for redeeming themselves. ;)

Quote from: BedrockBrendan;729316Cool. When do you expect it to be released.

Actual public viewing is slated for GenCon 2015. But we expect to have shorts completed between now and then to keep folks' appetites whetted.

It's really going to depend at what level the KS ends at. The more $$ that comes in the more options we have on the script and location shoots. This won't be a movie about five guys sitting around a table gaming (well not the entire movie anyway).

Funded and  approaching 67k with five hours to go. Still some pretty sweet limited pledges still up for grabs -- including the original Larry Elmore oil painting for the movie poster! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/d20e/kodt-live-action-series/comments
