This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Some say we're no longer needed. That we may be replaced by cold rules, that what we considered a trade is nothing more then smoke and mirrors. That we are tyrants, only waiting to lash out at our players, lest we are kept in check. That we're not wizards of imagination, spinning the worlds for our dear players, but merely purveyors of cheap tricks.

Well, I for one, say no. GMing is easy, but it's also something you can never be too good at. To quote Zelda "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this." And I ask that instead of wasting time on needless squabbles, we create "this".

Inspired by awesomness of Secret Santicore, I ask that we, together, create something like that - a compilation of GM advice, sample adventures or dungeons that can be used with any  mechanics, tables for random generation of Any Mad Idea That Crosses Your Mind, plot hooks, sample NPCs - anything. Then compile it all into a PDF that both a veteran GM as well as a newbie can grab, and use as source of inspiration.

Because no set of rules will ever replace the imagination of a good GM. Let's give that imagination a boost, shall we?

As the name suggests, I'd love for this to be released upon the Internet in March, but it's most likely too short amount of time - so perhaps March of next year?

Send your material over to gamemasterpridemarch@gmail.com. The finished product will be of course released for free. Write to me if you'd like to help with editing* and/or illustrations perhaps.

*I'll handle most of the spelling errors/text compilation. Will just need someone to put it all in a good PDF.

PS. You don't need to be a "veteran" to write something for this! If you just have your favourite adventure, or perhaps a plot hook - send it. As long as you just feel like a GM.

I'll definitely send in something...I don't know what yet. Maybe an adventure or some tables...

Oh: aimed at any particular system, like SS was aimed at older D&D?

Nope - I'd like it to be as actual - mechanics lite as possible, but if you need to include mechanics - go ahead.

I'm in, but I'll have to think about what to contribute.  I'm in love with community projects now.

One of the beautiful parts of Santicore was that a) you were given parameters, even if it was outside your bailiwick, and b) you were on a deadline.  That sort of thing activates a different part of the brain (for me, anyway).

'GM advice + tool content' sounds awesome.

"Well worth reading."  -- Steve Winter

"[Erik is] the Carrot-Top of role-playing games." -- Jared Sorensen, who probably meant it as an insult, but screw that guy.

Deadline is the month of March (puntastic, I know) - I'd really love to say "this one", but let's face it, two months will probably be not enough time. I'll try, but better being safe then sorry - I'm studying, working a bit and trying to organize a Con, so this'll probably eat the rest of my free, non - reading and non - playing time ;).

Hm - interesting notion about parameters, Vector. Perhaps I ought to amend my statement there.

I think it depends on the contributor.  There are probably folks who would see this and think "y'know, I've been meaning to type up my advice on [whatever] anyway..."   But I don't work that way. :)  I'll see what I can come up with.

I'll probably go with advice on GMing a horror game, since I've been doing that for quite a while now, and perhaps write up the "Epic Magic System" in terms that can be applied to any system.

Hmm, so what is the desired requirement here?  What could, for example, I write?  A treatise on magic traps and the application thereof?  When to say "yes" and when to say "no" to creative spell use by players?  Eh? Eh?

Such a treatise'd be more then welcome - I remember reading a lot of those in an old Polish gaming magazine, and loved them.

I've always found creative non-magical (or slightly magical) traps more interesting. A friend has those "Grimtooth's Traps" books for instance and looking over them one time it looked like they'd just gone crazy with magic.

What would be great would be a set of traps assemblable by a kobold on a budget, that are still capable of decimating a high level party...

Sounds like a great topic if you know a bit about traps - "Traps for Dungeon Lords On The Budget". Ancient Egyptians did a lot of those without any fancy schmancy magic.

Btw - if you find this idea not extremely stupid, please spread  the news and the link.

I'll contribute something.  Not sure what yet, but expect it in the next couple weeks.

Quote from: BedrockBrendan;502818This sounds like a fun project; what topics do you need people to cover.

Anything - it can be an adventure, it can be a list of plot hooks, it can be a table to generate magical swords, it can be an advice how to construct dungeon or how to be a good narrator, or it can be an article about Byzantine Empire and how to use it for RPG inspirations.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to announce we have a first actual submission - it'll need some work of mine, as it's a plot hook/mini adventure, but a material none the less.
