This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: boulet;408700UK history can be very obscure to me, especially the English Civil War. Right now the only thing that sticks out in my memory is Cromwell massacring Irish people by the thousands. I'm sure there must be more to this period. Would one of you sell me on the historical side of this setting, please?

Looks like it could be very compatible with On Her Majesty's Arcane Service, setting-wise, am I right?

The 17th century is the Reformation.  The English Civil War is at the same time as the end of 30 years war, which wound up destroying faith in religion more than anything.

It's a time with vestiges of feudalism surviving through the renaissance. - the royalists had a core unit of heavy cavalry made of lords.  There was both clashes of religion (in England the Church of England vs Calvinists vs Catholics) and traditional vs. modern.  You had highly traditional groups wanting to return to a medieval mindset along with the seeds of the Enlightenment.  Tactically, guns were a major force but it wasn't all guns like the American Revolution and the Napoleonic era.  The lack of professionalism of many of the armies and and the deadlocks led to much barbarism against civilians and politicians.  There were also many family castles that wound up cut off and beseiged despite holding only a few dozen inside.

I don't think we've ever been accused of that before! :D

Ok, I have a better picture now. it looks indeed like a fertile setting.

Pseudoephedrine

Any setting where I can be Algernon Sidney on a steel horse is A-OK with me.

The Civil War is sort of England turning into this post-apocalyptic wasteland for about a decade. You've got roving bands of scavengers and warlords riding around robbing everyone, with small, fragmented communities trying to hold out against the tide of chaos. It's one of the better early-modern settings for PCs.
Running
The Pernicious Light, or The Wreckers of Sword Island;
A Goblin\'s Progress, or Of Cannons and Canons;
An Oration on the Dignity of Tash, or On the Elves and Their Lies
All for S&W Complete

Actually, we've taken this idea somewhat literally, in a metaphorical way. In the book we're writing at the moment - No Man's Land - the Midlands are a cross between WWI, Mad Max and Night of the Living Dead. But in 17th century style, obviously!

Very nice, grats ya'all. I'm getting more and more intrigued all the time, despite not usually liking alt-history rpging as others have posted. I have to admit, the ideas sound wonderful, and I'm absolutely loving MRQII.

I would recommend this free online mag anyway, even if it hadn't said nice things about us - it's full of rpg, mini painting and wargaming goodness.
