This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea (Kickstarter)
« on: October 16, 2016, 08:10:03 AM »
Jeff Talanian's launching a Kickstarter for the 2nd Edition of Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea this Friday, Oct. 21! With the old box set almost gone, he's following up with a single-volume, hardback tome. Same game, same rules, but expanded to include more content, with four new classes, new monsters, new spells and new magic items. Plus, it will feature hundreds of new illustrations from John and Daisey Bingham, Charles Lang, Peter Mullen, Russ Nicholson, Glynn Seal, Val Semeiks, Jason Sholtis and Del Teigeler to complement the original Ian Baggley artwork. The hardback also includes a gigantic posted-map for the Hyperborea setting by Glynn Seal. Should be good!

P.S. This would be Jeff's 4th KS, following three other successful efforts (AS&SH 1st Edition in 2012, Hyperborea Adventure Three Pack in 2015 and Mystery at Port Greely in 2016).

Quote from: Jeff Talanian
Charles Lang is the cover artist for the second edition of Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea. As a follow-up to his painting that was featured on the original boxed set of AS&SH, this new painting takes our hero (and his cast of companions) into some bold action and adventure in the hoary wilderness of Hyperborea, illumed by the light of a bloated red sun.

Quote from: Jeff Talanian
The new HYPERBOREA map features the work of Mr. Glynn Seal of MonkeyBlood Design. It is already complete, and we are over a month away (Oct. 21) from launching our Kickstarter campaign for AS&SH 2nd Edition. In fact, the original is now here at North Wind Adventures.

So, what is different about the map? Well, it has been hand drawn -- pencils, inks, colored pencils. Labeling has been rendered via computer, afterwards.

The new HYPERBOREA map will*dwarf the old map, measuring 40 x 32 inches! It will fold to an 8-inch square, and will be tucked inside the hardcover.*

I never got the first one except as a PDF on OBS, so I will probably back this. And since most of my D&D is still 1e, I might have to get two. >.< AS&SH to me was like what 1e Unearthed Arcana could have been without the Tolkien references which to me is a good thing.

The first stretch goal just funded as well.

Quote
$17,500 PETER MULLEN ILLUSTRATED END SHEETS. Peter has already illustrated two frighteningly evocative pictures that form a single piece. If we achieve this initial stretch goal, we will have these printed on the cardinal red end sheets of the hardback—a grand scene that stretches from the front of the book to the back of the book.

Second and third stretch goals funded, with pledges now exceeding $22,500! Next up, hand-drawn character sheets at $25,000 and then on to ready reference sheets and an introductory adventure. Seems likely!

Quote
$20,000 VAL SEMEIKS FRONTISPIECES COLOURED BY DAISEY BINGHAM. Val has pencilled and inked six amazing, atmospheric, volume-dividing frontispiece illustrations. If we can achieve this second stretch goal, we will present these illustrations digitally coloured by Daisey Bingham. These colour pieces will be tipped in and sewn into the otherwise black-and-white book. Help us bring some colour to AS&SH!

Quote
$22,500 SATIN BOOKMARK. The hardback will include a lovely satin bookmark if this stretch goal is crossed.

Fourth and fifth stretch goals unlocked with funding now at $28.4k with strong momentum toward the $30K mark (2x funding goal).

$25,000 GLYNN SEAL HAND-DRAWN CHARACTER SHEET. This letter-sized, four-page AS&SH character sheet, hand-drawn by Glynn Seal, will be included in an appendix of the book and also as a free, downloadable and easily printable PDF.

Quote
$27,500 AS&SH READY REFERENCE SHEETS PDF. This graphically embellished PDF can be used by the referee for easy reference to the most pertinent tables and other information. Affixed to foam board or other like materials, the AS&SH Ready Reference Sheets also can serve as a referee’s screen.

Quote
$30,000 INTRODUCTORY ADVENTURE. An introductory HYPERBOREA adventure, “The Black Moss-Hag of Lug”, will be presented in an appendix of the book. It was written by AS&SH creator, Jeffrey Talanian, and will include a hand-drawn map by Glynn Seal.

Well... I wanted to get the print book but I live in Canada and with shipping and exchange rate, one book is about $140. So I backed the PDF. Mind you if it shows up at my FLGS down the road in around the $60 range I'll probably picked it up. I'm just morally opposed to paying $50 for shipping. :D

Man, double-whammy. Perhaps you could throw in with someone else from Canada to share shipping? Or convince a FLGS to buy the three-book package?

Hmm... My FLGS is The Sentry Box. I could give them a call. I know they stock OSR stuff, since I got most of the Labyrinth Lord books there. I might have even seen one of Pundit's games there. I could call them or maybe try email. They're more heavy into card and board games now and it looks like they didn't stock the first one. I probably would have bought it if I saw it.

This one's ending in about 24 hours - currently funded over 400% by 780 backers, all the stretch goals met. Should be an awesome book with tons of new art.

Check out the updates for many art previews.
