This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Would the ending of THE WATCHMEN actually work? INDEPENDENCE DAY?

To paraphrase something the Tomekulian king says at the end of Nausicaa of the valley of the Wind in reference to a similar thought, "Would such creatures even be human?"

After all, if mankind can't get unified even in the face of an extraterrestrial alien threat - then its all a big Why Bother!??

Sort of makes WalkerP and his Walkerists make sense if we go by what you guys are saying.

Now you are starting to understand, Koltar...

Great discussion, though, folks.  I never took the time to really think too deeply about the ending of the Watchmen but you are making some interesting analyses.

Ever think the infighting is what keeps humanity alive, that is our hope?

I think most people have said they would unite in the face of external threat but once the threat was gone would probably go back to the way things were before.

I am not convinced that if all humanity got the big kumbaya on that it would necessarily be good for humanity as a whole. Competition is what drives humanity, be it between persons or states.

Plus, if humanity keeps eyeing itself, thusly keeping itself armed, it will be ready when that big outside menace shows up.

I do not cotton to a world where all men are united behind a common cause, a common goal, a common peace.

Violence and conflict with our fellow man is what drives us, makes us great and terrible all at the same time.

I expect that even faced with the threat of extinction we will fight amongst ourselves as to the best means to face the threat. It is in that conflict that we will either succeed or fail, and it is to be embraced.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.
