Met him at GenCon 2007.

Really nice guy and a cool character actor.
His son is a pretty darn good character actor too - played 'Badger' and Baltar's lawyer.

AC/DC, Scorpions, Van Halen, Rush, Prince, U2, Def Leppard, Journey, Heart, Cheap Trick, NIN, Marilyn Manson, Tool, and many..many more.

My favorite was Rush's 30th anniversary tour. Best concert I have ever seen.

KISS, Neil Young, David Bowie, Robert Plant, Cold Chisel, the Violent Femmes, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Iggy Pop, the Cramps, U2, De La Soul, Public Enemy (with Ice-T). I stopped going to big concerts after the 80s. I've seen numerous Australian bands that you guys won't have heard of, like Hunters and Collectors.

The best was probably the Femmes in about 86 ("Better than big surf!"), but Neil Young did put on a rocking performance. The Cramps were a blast.

Me too. I do know Hunters & Collectors and thought they were good. Most memorable from the 80s were the Smiths, Stranglers, Clash (special prize for most violent gig--they were spat off stage after 20 minutes), New Order, Prefab Sprout, and Killing Joke.

REM, U2, each a number of times in the mid-80's, along with the Kinks one time. A little later, Jonathan Richman, Shonen Knife, Michelle Shocked. I hadn't been back to a big concert until recently when a friend took us to see Phil Lesch.

They were all over-amplified except for Shocked, who was outdoors. I'd probably pick REM as the best simply because they were in fairly small venues. Richman was,  too, but for some reason I was annoyed by some of the people around me.

Really the best rock shows I've seen were a band called Her Majesty the Baby but they never made it big.

U2! I went to see them around the time of the Boy album. Nobody will believe me, but back then they did NOT suck, on the contrary.

Just what was Jonathan Richman like, El? Did he insult the audience?

ENVY!

QuoteI thought that Thomas Dolby would just stand behind a group of keyboards during his show but he and his band were doing acrobatics all across the stage. It was more like a musical theatre performance than just a concert.
ENVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've only seen Three Dog Night and The Steve Miller Band live.  Great bands, no doubt--but not the ones I'd IDEALLY like to see.

I haven't made it to too many concerts myself, so I make up for it by hitting all day shows with bands I want to see.

Thus far I've seen Korn three times, Ozzy, Pantera, Tool, Godsmack, Kitty (twice, got on stage! Woot!), Mudvayne, Chevelle, Corrosion of Conformity, Brother Cane, Skindred, Static-X, Queens of the Stone Age, some no name band that, to date, remains the only motherfuckers I'd pay to watch cover Zepellin... seriously, they fucking smoked it, embarrassed the hell out of Brother Cane, who they were opening for.

And a few others that I forgot who played big shows, but I wasn't really into.

Of course, I've MISSED Metallica five fuckign times (the last time because fucking scalpers beat me to the tickets!), along with Guns and Roses (the first time, when they were touring together. Heard Axl was a punkass motherfucker, so not as huge a loss as it could be) and Faith No More.

Oh, yeah, and in a very surreal way I saw Damn Yankees play. I won't share all the details, but everyone in the first thirty or fourty rows had to stay on their knees....

I also saw Kid Rock, some rappers and a some country chick, along with Gary Sinese (not a musician per se (he does, apparently, play...)) but since it was all together I figure he can count this time. Also under somewhat surreal circumstances. Not as surreal as that Damn Yankee's concert... I don't think anything will top that... not without serious drugs in any case.

EDIT::: Fergot... The Genitorturers.  Despite an over-reliance on shock factor in their shows they had great chemistry with the audience.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

I got into them a little before Joshua Tree, and drifted away with Rattle and Hum.

QuoteJust what was Jonathan Richman like, El? Did he insult the audience?
I don't remember if I've seen him once or more than once. The time that I remember, he kept asking the sound people to turn down the amplification, which I appreciated. I don't much recall how he interacted with the audience but like I said, there were a couple people there who were just sort of annoying in a fannish way.

Jackalope

I've seen GWAR three times.

I just forgot they are actually a band.

They're more like the Muppets on a bad acid trip with some Gallagher mixed in.

I like wearing a white shirt to a GWAR show, see how many colors of goo end up staining it.   The last show I went to, in '96, I got black, orange and green.  Blood, blood and vomit IIRC.

I saw U2 at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana on, IIRC, the Rattle tour. No opening act. One of the best concerts I ever saw. One of those times when there was a chemistry between the band and the audience and the mood was just right.

Google-fu tells me this was the show I saw - I was a junior at Marquette visiting my younger sister at U of I.

Halfjack

The Cure
Elvis Costello
David Bowie
The Tubes
Peter Gabriel
Fear
The White Stripes
Tori Amos
DOA
The Jazz Butcher
Tupelo Chain Sex
X
Einsturzende Neubaten

Which was the best show? Tupelo Chain Sex, all three times. Small venue, loud, brilliantly talented, and a crowd that made everything fun. Second up would be White Stripes for pure improvisational genius and again a great crowd.

I see Crushadows every year at Dragon Con. Hell of a show, and the venue is small enough Rogue gets into the crowd. Last year he sang to my daughter. Twice. She's in love :D Too bad she's only 6...

One Horse Town

Quote from: Drohem;276447I think that the best performance that I've seen live was the Scorpions at the 1983 US Festival.  I went on Sunday to see all the rock bands.  Van Halen was the headliner.  However, the Scorpions rocked the hell out of the place.  Van Halen was real late coming on stage because they were so drunk and screwed up.  Finally, when they came on stage, they sounded like crap.  David Lee Roth flipped the crowd off, and was an ass on stage.  We got up and left in the middle of their set.

You were there? Cool. I've got some of that show on video - dunno where it came from. They must have cut some of the Van Halen performance out, apart from some dodgy harmonies, they seemed ok. As you say though, the set belonged to the Scorpions. The Zoo for the win! Quiet Riot and Ozzy Ozbourne were on the bill too, weren't they?

I've only seen Rush, Faith No More and Maria McKee at dedicated shows. Macker was fucking amazing.

Been to a couple of festivals though.

I wish i had been able to go to Donnington ('83 i think) with my brother. Sadly, i was only 13 at the time. He got to see the Ozzy, Blackfoot in their prime, the comeback set of Slade (who apparently rocked the fucking place), Big Country (RIP Stuart Adamson) and the mighty Motorhead.
