Title: Which sex starts the conversations and when?
Post by: riprock on October 06, 2007, 11:13:42 PM
This is completely unscientific and based solely from amateur observation:

Women seem to initiate a lot of conversations with men who are known to be part of the woman's community, but not personally known to the woman.  When a man is not known to be part of the community, the average women seems to avoid starting conversations.

By contrast, men seem to be willing to start conversations with any woman, regardless of kinship/having-been-introduced/community membership.

Theory: Women think in terms of social networks, kinship groups, best-friends-forever-clubs, etc., more than men do.  Women *also* like to forage more than men do.  They like looking at basically recognizable but individually unfamiliar things, and judging the qualities thereof.

And all of the above could well be completely wrong.

Just remember any rult that you (or anyone else) makes up , there will be plenty of exceptions.

Plus I don't think gender differences on things like that mean as much as they used to . In my circle of friends & co-workers, I know a woman who was in the military for many years, at least 4 bisexual women, two couples who are into BDSM culture, maybe 5 to 6 pagans/Wiccans, 1 metrosexual World of Darkness Storyteller,  and maybe at least 1 Log Cabin Republican....oh yeah there is the perky Christian Goth and her husband.

Who starts the conversations ? - It all depends on who feels like talking first and who doesn't...and if flirting might be involved.

Odd... I see the social circle thing as being maybe reversed... or something.

I myself tend to favor a tighter group of closer friends... with maybe a nebulous infinity outside of that composed of forgettable acquaintances. The women I know tend to have a larger group of more distant friends... and I'm not sure how they interact outside of that, because it gets hard for me to judge who is and is not a member of that group.

Just remember that gender roles are pretty nebulous, with plenty of subdivisions between them. For every ares there's a hermes, and for every aphrodite an athena... as terrible as that looks in print.
