Title: What were they thinking?
Post by: The Thing on May 10, 2021, 09:23:17 PM
Ok, superstitious or not, you have to admit these people were just asking for trouble.

I'm trying to see the potential for a game scenario here. Conspiracy/horror ones are pretty obvious.

Uh, you know the historical Vlad III Tepes -- the guy Stoker based Dracula on -- is considered something of a folk hero in that region, right? It'd be kinda like getting your jab at the Lincoln Memorial or something here in the States.

You're comparing Vlad the Impaler with Lincoln the Emancipater?

Plus, the Lincoln Memorial shows up in fiction all the time.

Don't blame me, blame the Romanians. Keep in mind the Ottomans had been screwing with Wallachia and surrounding regions for a LONG time prior to the Impaler demonstrating extreme disapproval of such by way of unique lawn ornaments. So yeah, Vlad's a historical hero to them.

General Sherman is admired, and so is Mother Theresa. They're rarely compared.

Sigh. No, no I am not. I am comparing historical personages who are considered heroes in their native lands.

Pat, you're supposed to be smarter than this. I didn't say he was MY hero, for crying out loud.

Sigh. Yes, you are. You literally compared the Castle of Dracula to the Lincoln Memorial, on the basis of their namesakes.

Ghostmaker, you're supposed to be smarter than this. I didn't say they were your heroes. I just pointed out that they were radically different, and comparing the two created an incongruous effect. Like comparing General burn-down-Atlanta with Mother living-in-poverty-to-help-the-poor-in-Calcutta.

I made the comparison as it was a historic site of note for that region, associated with a folk hero of same.

Yes, they are radically different, but that doesn't change the fact they are considered heroes in their parts of the world.

I don't know why you can't grasp that nuance.

I fully understand your intent, I'm not sure how anyone could have missed it, and I'm rather puzzled why you'd ever think that's an issue. As I've stated several times, I just pointed out you ended up comparing a guy known for lining roads with people staked ass-to-mouth with someone known for freeing slaves. That creates such a degree of cognitive dissonance that it overwhelms your attempted point.

Or at one of the "authentic Ninja villages" in Japan.

Or at Colonial Williamsburg.

Or, hell, the Renaissance Faire.

According to one I play roleplaying games with, that's actually a pretty apt comparison. Except he would think worse of Theresa.

A Penn and Teller epsiode of Bullshit had this to say:
"I would describe mother Theresa as a fraud, a fanatic and a fundamentalist. She was corrupt, nasty, cynical and cruel" -Christopher Hitchens interview.

Folk Hero?  In Romania, he’s a National Hero who saved Romania, Europe, and all of Christendom by holding off the Ottoman Empire. His cruelty was necessary to keep the country strong and able to defend against the Ottomans.

Note I said in Romania.

That was the point I was trying to make to Pat.

Good luck on making any headway though.

I literally said I understood the point. Several times. In fact, I think it's so obvious that I still don't understand how you could even think someone missed it.

Do you understand the point I made? Hint: It's not that, and I told you exactly what it was in my last post.

If that's how you choose to see it, then you must be surrounded by trolls.

You were proudly and admittedly trolling, before we managed to have a reasonable conversation or two.

Didnt Vlad free his people from the Slavery the Ottoman Empire would have brought?  Perspective wise, he is a much bigger hero than Lincoln.  He did impale people, the reason being it was standard for the Ottoman Empire to use impaling as a means to discourage and dishearten resistance wasnt it?  He simply did unto his mortal foes as they would have gladly done to him.  I say this because we have about zero evidence at this point that there will be any statues of Lincoln or him being considered any sort of hero in 300 years.  Vlad's position as a hero is still strong, and he has been going as a hero of the past for a lot longer.

Vlad Dracula did what was necessary to save his country from becoming slaves to the Ottomans.  It might seem distasteful to the modern person, but he is the reason there is a Romania, and not just a suburb of Istanbul.
