It's truly amazing that we live in a such a bizarre time. The so-called "mainstream" music has become even less creative, but if you look in the corners of the music world (regardless of the genre) there is an explosion of creativity, daring and most importantly, music made for the love of the music.

Whatever your genre, I urge you to dig around in the musical corners of YouTube and Spotify because its truly amazing how many THAT'S FREAKING AWESOME songs I've discovered in the past 5 years compared to the 20 years beforehand. I am heavily speaking to any of you over 40 (aka, old farts) whose playlists are stuck in the past. Like you, I love music from ancient times, but you will be shocked to discover how many cool new tunes exist in the margins.

And they're all free.

One of my issues with a lot of current metal, is it sounds like pop music. This sounds a lot like latin pop to me. It feels like it has the external trappings of metal but the core is missing. When it comes to metal, lately I've enjoyed the old school shit a lot more than much of what is being offered today (some of the new stuff works for me, but it doesn't quite resonate as much).

That said, this is a good song. I can't criticize it from a song writing point of view.

True. Pop metal is a thing now, power metal is very popular in Europe especially, and 80s hair metal is having an unexpected resurgence. However...there's some new badass old school thrash. I'm particularly happy with Testament's new album Titans of Creation. It's nothing new, just kickass thrash. I think one of my issues with power metal is it seems to be more oriented towards major keys. One of the hallmarks of metal for me is abundant use of minor keys.

I have found a few newer bands that appeal to me. I like Khemmis a lot. And, even though they have some power metal vibes from time to time, I do like Unleash the Archers. But even the newer stuff I listen to tends to be older bands like Iron Maiden. Mostly though, I think I am more interested in listening to metal from the days when it was still being shaped (which I grew up and played in at the tail end of: I got into metal in middle school in like '89): 1970 to the early 90s for me. There are definitely newer bands doing things I like, just something about the overall metal aesthetic now feels a little off for me personally.

I missed metal in the 80s, but I'm pleased to see that it went in and out of style without being destroyed and now that it's a counterculture again is still happily churning out stuff for people who like it.
