This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What is freedom?

Quote from: Serious PaulAs I understand the terms of usage here I am well with in my rights as a poster to post this. Are you suggesting I shouldn't be allowed to post freely?
Me? No, I think you should be banned.

You're not here to talk about rpgs. This therpgsite, not tellRPGPunditHe'sACockSite, or VaguePoliticalMusingsSite. Roleaying games. If you're not here to talk about those, then you are just dead weight.

Telling RPGPundit he's a cock or talking politics - they're like the idle chat before a game session. They're an added bonus, not the actual point of the place; an entree, not the main course. We're here to talk rpgs. If you're not, you should be banned.

Otherwise, you're like the guy in a group of friends, all buying each-other rounds of drinks, when it comes to his turn - "oh, sorry lads, I'm tired, I'm not drinking anymore, so I won't buy a round."

Make your rpg contribution to therpgsite. That's what it's here for.

You're quite off topic. I don't think I'll need to reply to any of the garbage you seem to have bottled up inside of you. Kindly shut up, and let the rest of us discuss things like adults.

Now then where was I?

Isn't this a bit too tragic? Too rebellious? Too Emo is what I want to say, but I do think you mean something more than what some tragically hip kid means, so I am asking you to explain yourself here.

Interesting. I think I'd want to hear more before I completely agree. Care to elaborate?

Quote from: SigmundSeems to me the meaning of "freedom" is relative. I would call the USA a free country, because our people are free to move about with very little restriction, we can badmouth the government and say pretty much anything we want, as long as it doesn't do measurable harm to someone else (heck, even then we might get away with it). We are free to find a do pretty much any type of work we can. We can buy almost anything we want as long as we can afford it. If we can manage to click things into place we can become rich (then, if we play our cards wrong then right, we can lose it and then get it back again). We can love pretty much who we want, and we can live with pretty much who we want.

There are some "freedoms" we don't have, some good, some bad. I like that I'm not free to murder others, abuse children, steal things, etc. I don't agree that homosexual people shouldn't be allowed to marry, or that men don't have more say in aborting a child. I feel the government has too much influence in how businesses are run, and I feel some taxes are against the spirit of our system.

Overall, this is "freedom" from my perspective. Just about anyone else you ask will have a more or less different idea of what the word means, I would think.

Ah, Janis Joplin. Worst singer that ever made it big. And by "worst" I mean tone, pitch, and that sort of shiznit. As an actual artist she gets mad respect from me.

Did you happen to look up at the top of this forum and see what it's called? If he were to actually post RPG stuff here he'd be a lot closer to being in the wrong than he is with "vague political bullshit."

It's a quote - Kris Kristofferson's Me and Bobby McGee, made famous by Janis Joplin. That's all.

Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin' ain't worth nothin' if it ain't free
Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues
Feelin' good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

It's just pop song lyrics.

The man ain't got no culture!

No I got it, I am just wondering why he choose it. Is that how he really feels? Or was he just listening to some Janis while he was posting? (How am I to know?)

Probably the first thing that popped into his mind when he read the title. That's exactly what happened to me. I was surprised and laughed when I read his post, because I was going to post the same thing. :D

Edit: I was indeed under the impression you didn't follow the reference. I am considerably older than most RPG players, and thought maybe you bein' a young'un might not have caught it.

I'm 32, but my mother loved Janis Joplin with a passion. My parents made sure I got a good healthy exposure to the classics. I have 7,000 or so CDs. (I love music, even if I have no musical talent what so ever.)

I think it's fairly straightforward. The longer version that is integral to my ethical system is "your life, your rules, your decisions". In other words, the extent to which you are able to live your life by your rules and your decisions, ie. self determination, is the extent to which you have freedom/liberty.

Freedom is that sliver on the Venn diagram between what you want to do and what other are willing to allow you to do.
No one was ever put in a history book for being a great conformist.
