This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What happened to the DNDaDoc film?
« on: October 03, 2022, 01:36:56 PM »
There was this kickstarted documentary back in 2012 I think that was supposed to chronicle D&D's history, with interviews of all the major figures still alive at the time and the participation of people like David Ewalt.

Does anybody know what happened to it? It obviously didn't get made, but I see absolutely zero history on what actually went down.

No idea but there's this:

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

Another group took them to court for some reason and as of 2016 that was the last word from them.

Looks like they split off and ran ANOTHER kickstarter and guess what. It aint produced either.

Heres some comments from several years ago.

I'm really disappointed with both sides on this.

I'm very frustrated by the fact that we've now gone almost 5 years without any update from Anthony Savini, the one remaining partner who is in charge of this project. After the lawsuit was settled, we should at least get an update on the status of this project. But he has ignored this. The fact he hasn't bothered to let us know what is going on really makes me think he's cancelled the project but doesn't want to say it.

However, I'm also frustrated by the other team -- The Great Kingdom project. While they have been making sporadic updates there is very little concrete updates on their side.

I realize that both sides have had loses and the lawsuit ended up draining time and perhaps resources, but this was such a shame as a lot of people backed this project hoping we could get a definitive documentary on D&D...but it's now been close to 10 years since the original solicitation for this came out, and a few other documentaries have either been released or about to be, plus there have been other good books on the history.

This project is a shame...

As others have said in the thread, some of the producers from this project started over and are continuing on with a different project, also a documentary of the history of DnD called "The Great Kingdom".

In the Risks and challenges portion of their Campaign page, they wrote, "to those who helped support the previous documentary, we would like to offer a digital, downloadable copy of THE GREAT KINGDOM for FREE. It's our small way of thanking you for your support and patience. All you need to do is email us (TheMostEpicGame@gmail.com) and there will be a copy waiting for you when the film is done." I just did this and heard back within a day or three.

Hi everyone,

An update on all fronts --

After nine months of seeking to negotiate a settlement outside of court, we learned on Monday that the other parties -- Fantasy Game Films and all -- chose not to sign the settlement. Their attorneys have also asked to be relieved from representing them moving forward. Yesterday we attended the court hearing. The judge did not allow relief for their lawyers and a date of June 10th was set for the next meeting.

If you want to see the details, they are at this link below. Documents 64-67.

Unfortunately, this lack of settlement is negatively affecting our ability to raise the additional funds we need to finish this film. We will continue to keep you posted and will diligently seek to work toward resolution.

On a lighter note, while I was working in Minnesota on a unrelated project, I had some free time. Major Dave Wesely, creator of Braunstein, was kind enough to invite him over to play a wargame. I took a couple photos, but wished I had more than just an iPhone. The minis we are playing with belonged to Dave Arneson.
