This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What do we think of the new Willow series?
« on: June 01, 2022, 03:13:10 AM »

Normally, I'd be all over this. But Lucas/Disney has been pretty underwhelming, with one exception I can think of.
Mostly I'm tired of being dissapointed.

The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

Looks okay to me. Isn’t Marvel and it isn’t Star Wars, it isn’t a 2Edgy5Me update of a kid’s show.

If they don’t turn Willow into a grouch-ass old man who has completely given up, I’ll be pleased.

Don’t worry, he has disability privilege. The woke will fall over themselves to say he’s perfect.

Possible. I figure the worst case scenario is I spend an hour of time on it and say to hell with it if it blows.

Well, the trailer doesn't look horrendous. It kinda looks like the character had retired but is being asked to come out of it to help out new heroes.

Like you said, as long as he's not suffering from Luke Skywalker syndrome, it might be promising.

Again, they probably can't pull Luke syndrome because Warwick Davis has disability privilege. If they did, then the SJWs would tear Disney apart for ruining their disability rep.

Unlike most of you I really enjoyed Luke Skywalker Syndrome (though I agree that backstory for it was lame as fuck), but still I hope they won't do anything like that with Willow, because well Willow did nothing in original to even become failed grumpy master. He's not a jedi, but friendly dwarf.

Don't give them any ideas.

In their defense, the trailer seems to have a tone of respecting the source material, and not that they're going to make it so that Willow tried to kill Elora Danan because of a mystical vison, or some other revisionist bullshit.

It looks like a setup. They're giving us false hope by showing us a trailer that looks like it could be for a real Willow series to lure us into dropping our guard, so that when the other shoe drops and they start laying out the woke nonsense and other lameness they can crush our souls and laugh manically at our despair, as they destroy the last remaining vestiges of our childhoods.

Don't give into temptation! Don't let them fool you with this trickery—it's only a trailer. Wait for the real thing to drop and the first few episodes to roll in, and watch them with reservation before you get your hopes up. Remember this thing has Lucasfilms and Disney+ logos on it!

What I really wanted out of the original was Madmartigan: The Movie. I am not alone in this.

I see nothing here that interests me.

Same for me, though the showrunner did say MM is in the show and Kilmer will play the role.   I imagine as being long retired given Kilmer's health.

Joanne Whalley was on-board with Val Kilmer reprising the Madmartigan role. That is the most interesting part for me.
(If she didn't want to revisit this movie, which led to their relationship, then she wouldn't have come back to Willow.)

I have very low expectations for anything Disney/Marvel. Avengers:Endgame did not exceed those expectations. The Mandalorian turned me off from Boba Fett, but I suppose I will have to give it a try eventually.

I'll wait to be disappointed by Willow as well. I am not rushing back to see anything Disney-related.

I didn't think that the original Willow was a great movie, so I am indifferent to this series except to say the refrain of, "Where did Hollywood's originality gone and why do they have to keep resurrecting the dead memories of my youth?"
"Meh."

Gen X is taking over all the senior positions of power from the Boomers, and they're approving things they're familiar with.

Same. Never impressed me. Though it gets points for pissing off Siskel & Ebert.  8)

As for the spate of sequels and re-makes. Hollywoods been doing these  for forever. Usually just not with such huge spans between sequels. As ever. Part of the reason is Marketing says its a good idea. But in some cases its because fans were asking for one. Hell. I can think of quite a few movies that made me want to see more of the world, characters, or story. And sometimes its just because the original creators had more story they wanted to tell. And sometimes the span is so long because its taken that long to get backing to make the sequel.

But the ongoing fad is remakes and reboots and re-imaginings. 90% of which should have never seen light of day because its done only to use as a virtue signal platform anymore.
