This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What are you reading?

It's been while since I have seen a thread of this type.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've never read any Hornblower stuff so, I picked up Mr. Midshipman. Good stuff so far, wish I would have read it earlier. :D

The Innkeeper's Song by Peter S. Beagle. Really good fantasy, I am being surprised because it is much more adult than The Last Unicorn and quite a good read.
"Meh."

The Good Assyrian

I tend to read non-fiction, so right now I am reading The Regiment by Farley Mowat.  It is his history of the Canadian army unit that he served with in Italy in WW2.  I will probably go back and re-read his memoir of his war experience And No Birds Sang at some point in the near future as it has been a number of years since my first reading of it.

I also have The Secret Life of Harry Houdini and a half-finished biography of Hermann Goering lurking on the fringes of my short attention span...

I just finished re-reading "Velikovsky Reconsidered" - after rereading Velikovsky's "Worlds In Collision," and picked up "The Captain's Vengeance - an Alan Lewrie Naval Adventure." Simultaneously to reading "Velikovsky Reconsidered" I re-read Vance's "Maske:Thaery." My reading tastes are ridiculously eclectic.

Serious Paul

I just finished reading City Works, a D&D book. It wasn't bad at all. I am surprisingly behind in my reading at the moment-my internet connection is through my wifes machine, and my own machine is offline.

Just about halfway through the third book in John Christopher's The Tripods Trilogy.  I read these in grade 6 (I believe they may even have been part of the curriculum) and after having recently read a bunch of Christopher's adult post-apocalyptic novels (The World in Winter, A Wrinkle in the Skin, etc.) I was psyched to go back and check these out.  They haven't lost a step.  A quick and fun read.  I strongly recommend them for anyone interested in post-alien invasion earth scenarios.  Or for the adolescent geeks in your life.

Ah, Book 2.  See what I meant about the last chapter of Book 1?

On my night stand (and in my briefcase):

McMafia, by Misha Glenny
The Three Musketeers, by Alexandre Dumas
The Arabian Nights (I forget the translator/editor)

Mr. Midhsipman Hornblower is very good stuff, but Lieutenant Hornblower is my personal favorite. Unlike all the others, it's told from the point of view of another character, which is an excellent device.

I think His Dark Materials is the name for the whole trilogy. I won't be finished with the Golden Compass for about a week, I figure. I'm just doing a chapter or two a night.

Oops.  You're right.  Book 2 is The Subtle Knife.

Glad I didn't spoil anything. :deflated:

I'd live. I'm generally okay with spoilers. Some of the forward mentions stuff about worlds and which worlds the various books take place in.

Please, please tell me that you are wearing your Critical Thinking hat while reading Velikovsky, that man's theories make my teeth itch in their incorrectness.
