Quote from: flyingmiceMr. Midhsipman Hornblower is very good stuff, but Lieutenant Hornblower is my personal favorite. Unlike all the others, it's told from the point of view of another character, which is an excellent device.

Cool, if it's better than Midshipman then it will be a great read.:keke:

Soul Made Flesh
Trilobite!: Eyewitness to Evolution
Hero System Sidekick, found it for $4 at half price books.
GURPS Hellboy from half price books. I think that the gamer fiction in it I really like. I didn't know about the Hellboy novels...
The Dragon's Nine Sons. I dunno though, something about it just breaks my suspension of disbelief. I think I'll switch to Rendezvou with Rama
and Finally the Savage Worlds Freeport Companion.

I've got a ton of other stuff lying around but that's the stuff I've read more than a couple of pages of lately and want to finish first. Well, except maybe The Dragon's Nine Sons.

Trilobite is at work and I'm reading it during lunch.
Soul Made Flesh is bedtime reading.
The gaming books I've been reading here at the desk waiting for software to compile.
The Dragons Nine Sons is pure entertainment couch reading. Though I just found the new Glenn Cook Garrett Files fantasy noir P.I. book Cruel Zinc Melodies, I can't read it, my wife coveted and requisitioned it.

Balbinus

Animal's People, by Indira Sinha, booker longlist (and possibly shortlist) if that matters to anyone.  A novel about a boy with useless legs crippled as a child by the accident in Bhopal, surprisingly good and far less depressing than it sounds.

Annoyingly, I should be on The Acceptance World, which is the third volume of Anthony Powell's twelve volume epic A Dance to the Music of Time, but I felt too crap this week.  I read one volume of ADttMoT and then one or two other books, so as not to overdose on the Powell.

Just finished some Hammett and Atomic Bazaar, a fairly good book about the rise of the nuclear poor, non-fiction.

Ysbryd

I'm reading José Frèche's Jade Disk trilogy to get myself into Qin mood and mode. I'm halfway through the second book but losing interest. Not even the gratuitous (and slightly silly) sex scenes do it for me anymore.

I started Dostojewski's "The Brothers Karamasoff".
Playing: nothing

Vance can't write anything less than "very good," and he frequently hits "superb." I can't say that about any other living author.

The only trouble with Vance is that, like Dr Seuss, if I read his books, I start talking and writing in that manner. It's maddening sometimes! :O

Nice!  Savour these.

This sort of convinced me that Palahniuk was a great writer but also sort of turned me off of him at the same time.  It's just so dark!  Some crazy ideas, though.

Without a doubt.
Of the Allastor novels, I prefer Trullian. It really gets to the heart of some of Vance's concerns, as does Wyst, actually. Marune is a bit of an oddball, but still a lot of fun. I need to reread it soon.
I just picked up three out of the four planet of adventure books. this is probably the fifth or sixth time I've owned these. I just keep loaning them out and never getting them back.
I met Vance in the 90's. He was super grumpy to the guy in front of me in the line, and basically shuffled him off in about thirty second. After that, I expected the same treatment, but much to my surprise and bewilderment, he spent about a half hour talking to me. I have no idea why. Eventually, I had to beg off because I started to feel bad about the other people waiting. Strangely enough I had almost the same experience when I met J. Scott Campbell a few years later.

Trullian is possibly my favorite Vance book. I have always wanted to do a Hussade RPG. :D

Yeah it's big on my list too. I think my favorite is probably still the dying earth, but Trullian, Empharyo, the Planet of Adventure books and Araminita Station are all pretty close to tied for second.

Oooh! Emphyrio is definitely in there with Trullion... with the others nipping at their heels. :D
