This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

More obscure nostalgia: Genesis II and PAX

On a roll with my Google-fu, I finally tracked down the title of a TV movie dimly remembered from the early 70's, based only on the fact that it involved some kind of subway trains and a dystopian society whose enforcers used some kind of cattle prod-like device to keep people in line.

The title: Genesis II, dreamed up by none other than Gene Roddenberry (and featuring such bit players from Star Trek as Mariette Hartley, Majel Barett, Ted Cassidy). It was actually a pilot that didn't get picked up, but was revived and failed twice more--as Planet Earth and Strange New World before everyone collectively threw in the towel. Diana Muldaur, another familiar Trek face, appeared in the later incarnations.

So why bring it up? Mainly to see if anyone else remembers these shows, or such factoids as the "stims" (sort of like sonic cattle prods) or the bad guys with two navels (!) But partly also because if you look at the three versions of the show plus the episode seeds of the first version, there's some potential material for post-apocalyptic gaming.

Yeah I remember it  - back in August I talked about using those Roddenberry pilots merged with Ark II as the basic for a post-Apoc campaign outline.

I also mentioned all three in the "Life After People - The RPG" thread less than a month ago, including links to the introductions of each of them (as well as Ark II) here.  As I hinted at, these were the first appearances of "Dylan Hunt" as a character name in a TV pilot, the name later used an Andromeda for the main character.

Ah, well, I skipped the life after people thread and I think I read some of Ed's thread but never put 2+2 together.

It looks like I can watch all of Genesis II (and maybe the others) via YouTube. Thanks!

Interesting side note is that Genesis II was rejected by the network in favor of the Planet of the Apes TV series. I remember enjoying that, too, but it only lasted a season.

I would've loved if GENESIS II / PAX idea had been turned into a TV series.

If Majel Barret controls the rights to that one - I think that should be the next TV series that she produces or gives permission to.

Bring Back the REAL Dylan Hunt!!!

I guess you already know this from your sig, but the Dylan Hunt charcater, and the initial 'frozen guy brought back to life hundreds of yeras later' setup, was used in "Andromeda". IIRC, Roddenberry tried twice to get this off the ground, and another firm tried it again. I think they were playing off of the fear of nuclear war that prevailed at the time. Would the same thing play now?

WRONG!!!!

Kevin Sorbo saw various outlines from the old Roddenberry notes right before Andromeda started filming. He chose that name - but otherwise the stories are completely different. (or mostly, mostly)

The REAL Dylan Hunt .... to me would be the one from the piot movies. Either McCord or Saxon appear to be better actors than Sorbo at approximately the same respective ages.

He's wrong--you're wrong--

Anyone's wrong that doesn't agree right here, right now, that John Saxon totally rocks! He's a freakin' legend, man!!

Can he outswank the inestimably swanky Jim Kelly? Um, I think so:

Dig it, baby! Saxon's the man.
