This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Saw this news story and all I could think of was "Gee, TORCHWOOD might be a perfect fit for that place." ...."Captain Jack  might be tame in that city."

The Daily Mail is a hate filled rag, it's the Fox News of UK print journalism.  It's about as low as our papers go.  Nobody serious reads it, or cites it.  I appreciate from overseas that may not be obvious, but I assure you it is the case.  If you want right wing news sources, The Telegraph, The Times and The Spectator are all reasonably respected (well, I have issues with all three, different for each, but they don't just plain make shit up like the Mail).

As for the thread topic, because that's where the BBC has facilities that it wants to make greater use of.

Yes, I've known that detail for 2 or 3 years now. As for trivia about Sci-Fi Action-adventure TV shows, I'm normally pretty well-read and informed.

The OP was meant to be a humorous because of the many people over the years saying Capt. Jack Harkness is a tad over-the-top and flirts toomuch.

I don't take ANY British tabloid seriously.

So pictures of drunks passed out on the streets is slanted to the right... how? It wasn't an opinion piece, unless you think pointing out over-the-top (and illegal) public behavior is somehow an attack on the left.

But I do agree that quoting certain sources tends to make people ignore arguments made, simply because they don't like those certain sources. It's part of the confirmation bias that's destroying Western civilization - if I don't like "xyz" (person, news, etc.) I can safely ignore it because it's always wrong and my impeccable sources are always correct and never biased.

Riiight.

All they ever show of Britain is the ugly, the horrible, sometimes also the made-up.  That's an agenda, what you choose not to show can be as important as what you choose to show.

But my point was the source, not the story, it's not a confirmation bias issue - it's a reliability issue.  The Daily Mail is a rag with no credibility.  There are right wing papers with credibility, the Telegraph for example, that's just not one of them.  You're making an assumption that I don't like it because I don't share its politics, that's not the issue at all, I used to read the Telegraph every day and used to subscribe to the Spectator, the issue is the Mail is a piece of shit which can't be relied on for accurate news.

It's not a right/left issue, it's not a confirmation bias issue, it's that specific source I object to, not sources on the right generally.

Edit:  To add, the same issue came up once with Brian Gleichman.  I pointed out that the Mail couldn't sensibly be used as a source, he came up with a link to a Telegraph article on the same point and I happily discussed the issue with him.  Not all sources are equal, the Mail does sometimes cover stuff that's correct, but it also often omits key facts or circumstances and isn't reliable.  The assumption that all sources are equal is a nonsense, would you suggest the Morning Star was a reliable news sources or Socialist Worker?  I don't think so, I certainly wouldn't.  Nor is the Daily Mail.

Well, then, my apologies. Still, calling it essentially an unreliable rag that can't be trusted without something to back it up does tend to let others make their own assumptions about your views. As to showing only the seamy underbelly of England - well, as we used to say in Journo101 - Good News is No News.

Edit: And yes, I'm well aware of the problem of citing sources people feel strongly about one way or another. I dared to lnk to a Fox News story that completely derailed the subject into "Faux News ebuhl Right-Wingars" - when, in fact, the byline was Associated Press. That's part of the problem - people are so invested in hating some organization that they think is not only wrong, but outright lies, that they can't accept anything from them, even if it's actually sourced and factual. It's not a matter of just not relying on it without double-checking, its a case of active hatred. So... basically, any time I read something interesting on Fox, I find a link to the same story from another souce to avoid that problem. I think its wrong, but it saves a lot of frothing insanity from the other side.

To be honest, I don't have much regard for any US broadcast news organisation.  You guys have some excellent print journalism, but your tv stuff often seems to be shockingly bad.  Edit:  I don't of course preclude the possibility there may be excellent ones I'm unaware of.

Ours is trending the same way, I think it's the pressures of rolling news, but possibly that's a broader topic.

The difficulty with Fox is while undoubtedly they do have news which is properly sourced and checked, they also have some fairly heavily distorted or manipulated stuff.  It's not necessarily irrational to say "I don't have the time to check their work, I'll just disregard that source", though one might wish to do the same for CNN for whom I also have very little time.

The trouble is, picking sources makes sense, there's a firehose of news and we can't pay attention to it all, we have to pick sources we trust to be, well, fair and balanced to coin a phrase.  Trouble with that is it opens us massively to confirmation bias, which I understand (though here I can't speak with confidence) is considered increasingly an issue in the US (less so in the UK I think, we don't really have equivalents of Fox or CNN or whatever so far).

Well, again, my problem isn't necessarily ignoring Fox News-produced stories; I'm talking about knee-jerking because the link is to the Fox News site, but the STORY is actually AP or whatever. I don't see the problem some people seem to have with taking 1/2 a second to read the by-line and seeing "Oh, AP, ok" - it tends to make me think it's more ideological than confirmation bias.

Thanks for that tip.  I've heard numerous people cite the Daily Mail for one reason or another but I never knew it was essentially a tabloid.  That is a problem with the internet, you never know in other countries what is reliable and what isn't unless you ask a native.

Trust me, that is a problem with all TV news in this country these days.  Print suffers from it too.  People don't want dry fact reporting anymore, as evidenced by CNN's tanking ratings, so they are all injecting opinion into their news stories which would be fine if they showed both sides, but they don't.  For example, have you noticed how many news stories are devoted to opinion polls........no facts or contexts, just "approval ratings" and the like.  What is newsworthy about the opinions of some group of 100 idiots who happened to be home to answer their phone for a pollster?  So you pick the poll that says what you want and Ta-Da it is suddenly news.  The tricky part is figuring out the difference between fact and opinion these days.
