This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Tor.com and Bruce Baugh

Quote from: flyingmice;226846Does tor.com have anything to do with Tor Johnson? Because if it does, I'm so there! Otherwise, why bother?

No. Sorry.

At least I don't think so.

Quote from: ticopelp;226851Ha, you must be new here!

No, I just thought it was neat and cool and underestimated the Baugh anguish.

Actually, I was just being a wiseass... I glossed the article and thought it looked interesting. I'm unaware of the whole Braugh-ha-ha myself.

He does that alot.  He does it to Brogstrum and he does it to Baugh.  He calls them horrible game designers yet both of them sell lots of books, probably many more copies then Pundit has sold of FTA!.

I take it with a grain of salt.

that pretty well sums it up. Pundit threadcraps on every thread that mentions either of them.

Quote from: Settembrini;226840It was no one else but Baugh HIMSELF who diagnosed Pundit with a mental illness that needs strong medication.

Because a guy who wages war on invisible swine and against The Forge and is the only one who knows he is at war and declares victory is the picture of mental health.

I agree with The Pundit more often then not but these things don't make him look too good.  He has had the good sense to back off a lot from these things, probably because he saw declaring war against an invisible enemy does him no favors.

Baugh's piece was okay as a summary of RPG development. It doesn't strike me as "myopic" as just...introductory, as if the intended audience is people who aren't really conscious of the big online RPG discussions. Which is probably the case, given that Tor's audience is probably composed of people who know what RPGs are and may even play them, but aren't necessarily hard-core about the hobby.

I did think using Tekumel as the only example of a detailed setting was a bit weird.

I didn't see much bias, but I didn't read it too quickly.  Dar (to try to get back on track with some actual substance about the article in question), where was the bias you mentioned?

You want to know something really funny?  I originally read the title as "Gor.com and Bruce Baugh" and had a completely different idea on where the thread was going.  :D
Now Prepping: One-shot adventures for Coriolis, RuneQuest (classic), Numenera, 7th Sea 2nd edition, and Adventures in Middle-Earth.

Recently Ended: Palladium Fantasy - Warlords of the Wastelands: A fantasy campaign beginning in the Baalgor Wastelands, where characters emerge from the oppressive kingdom of the giants. Read about it here.

I did, too.

Walker, I agree that mentioning Tekumel and then leaving it at that was a little weird. It's not just that other settings "deserve" mention, but (based on my assumptions about the audience) a more familiar "deep" setting like Glorantha would help get the point across.

Quote from: jgants;226839Fine, shatter people's dreams of a Bruce Baugh supplement for FtA! (I wonder what that would look like...)

Knowing Baugh's typical appalling deconstructionist modus operandi, I would imagine it would involve going backwards, and avoiding adventure.

(maybe you could cut and paste the article into a text file, without the byline and actually try and read it for its content and then comment)

The only thing that's worth pointing out about the article has already been said: its Baugh being in Baugh-land, where he equates the Forge and its bullshit as being players on equal-level with D&D as far as influence in the RPG world, and that its the next big thing.
That's about par for the course for his crapulence.

Oh, and of course he speaks out in favour of the marketing scheme of declaring a game to be a "limited series" to cover one's ass in the case of failure, not surprising for him given that the series he was best known for was an abysmal failure. I bet he wishes that back then he or WW had thought of using the "blue rose" tactic and claiming the plan for "Gamma World" D20 was "always" to make a limited run of books. Of course, even that wouldn't have saved it, since unlike BR it had no redeeming faculties whatsoever and was shit right from the start.

And yet given some of the design choices for 4e, I'd say Story-based design is having a significant influence on the hobby.

But let's get to the heart of the matter.  Show us on the doll, RPGPundit, where exactly Mr. Baugh touched you.

Quote from: RPGPundit;226809Bruce Baugh is a cunt, and one of the greatest failures in the history of RPG writing.

But how do you really feel?

As soon as I read "rolegaming", the article could not go anywhere good.  Does that make 4e "boardplaying"?

I am mixed on Baugh.  For me, Trinity and Vampire: Dark Ages were the two most interesting WW products.  However, D20 GW was an abomination.

Mutant Future is the best GW version I have seen since 1e.
