This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: KenHR;250003I picked up Octopus a couple weeks ago from a mail order place.

Any other recommendations?
Actually, that might be their best, most diverse album.

Octopus, Free Hand, In a Glass House, and the Power and the Glory are usually cited as their best. I really like their King Biscuit Flower Hour CD, which features music from those albums. The sound quality is good, and it rocks a lot harder than their official live album (Playing the Fool), which suffered from a bit too much gloss and polish IMO.

QuoteAnyone here a fan of Porcupine Tree or any other of Steven Wilson's projects?

Yeah. I love the Tree. My avatar over at tbp is from their best-of.

I haven't heard No-Man. I thought Blackfield 2 was a decent pop record.
Don\'t forget rule no. 2, noobs. Seriously, just don\'t post there. Those guys are nuts.

Speak your mind here without fear! They\'ll just lock the thread anyway.

Thanks for the recommendations!

PT is a group I was familiar with years ago as I had some of their early stuff (when it was just a one man studio project) on various compilations.  Very space-rock.

A year or so ago, one of my bosses had a scheduling conflict and gave my girlfriend and me tickets to see them in Albany.  What a surprise!  These days, compared with early stuff like "Always Never," it's a completely different band, much heavier, more complex.  We both became fans that night (Meredith had a fangirl crush on Wilson for months) and snapped up a ton of their albums.  Haven't heard any of Steven Wilson's other projects, though; we missed a chance to see one of them open for Dream Theater a few months back.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

And no one gives a fuck about your ignore list.

A couple of years ago, I really wanted to see the Tree when they were in Chicago, probably the same tour as you mention, but I was out of town for a couple of weeks.

They ended up releasing a live DVD culled from those shows. Very good if you haven't grabbed it ("Arriving Somewhere..."). But then I guess you already know how good they are live. I think the extra guitarist/vocalist really should be a full-time member of the band.

So what other prog bands can we discuss? Jethro Tull? Spock's Beard? Happy the Man? Hatfield and the North? Focus? Yezda Urfa?

Anyone care to recommend some overlooked gems?

Quote from: gleichman;249509Some of them seem to be gamers btw, Within Temptation did songs for some electronic games "The Howling" was said to be for The Chronicles of Spellborn while Wishmaster from Nightwish sounds like someone's D&D campaign to me...
No wonder: "Wishmaster" actually includes a number of direct references to the Dragonlance novels ("I'll be with you soon, my shalafi"), as well as Lord of the Rings. Another Finnish band, Battlelore, goes quite a bit further in mining Tolkien for inspiration, though.

Marillion was always one of my favourites, especially during the earlier Fish era.
Previously known by the name of "GrimGent".

Quote from: FASERIP;250768Jethro Tull?

Due to the combination of flute and voice, one of the most easily recognized artists that I can think of.

Good music, but boy something of a downer.

How about Enigma? Loved their first album and sort of cooled on them afterwards...
