SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Just to contribute to our mysoginistic reputation, I want to state here and now that I'd be glad to meet Shewolf's hubby in the squared circle for the right to adore her.

Quote from: RPGPundit;229473...over on the thread about RPG.net's thread about us, Kyle suggested that something about the nature of moderation here essentially removes 50% of our potential user base.

An insight he stole from me and did not credit.

I didn't credit you because I don't agree. I don't believe it's the moderation, it's the users who really set the tone of any website; and it's the tone which attracts or puts off certain groups of people.

This is especially true on a low-moderation website such as ours. If on rpg.net or SJGames they get a lot of fucksticks the mods are at least partly to blame, since they strongly control the content of people's posts by proscription and encouragement of mobbing. Here, we say whatever stupid things we want to, so we're entirely responsible for the tone of the site.

I always subscribe to the dictum that is better to stay silent and be believed a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Speakin' as a fool, of course.

Now, that said, I can't imagine that any female worth her salt couldn't join our fair forum and hold her own. To be honest, unless they hang a sign on their "neck" saying they are a girl - how would we know? And more importantly - what the hell difference would it make?

Kyle Aaron, its simpler than that .

Jacalope doesn't deserve credit because such comments and observations were made BEFORE he ever registered on this forum.

SJG forums actually has a pretty good percentage of women posters on there.  At least two or three of their moderators are women.

The "tone" of any unmoderated board devoted to a primarily male subject matter, such as role-playing games, is going to skew towards the tone of this place: a place where people get called on spurious bullshit.  Because guys thrive on macho bullshit like challenging each other and establishing pecking orders.

Women, as a general rule, avoid places where people get called on spurious bullshit.

Pundit and Werekoala are partially right: there is no inherent reason that women shouldn't be able to thrive in an environment like this, but with only occasional exceptions, we won't see it happen.  Women of our generation are too spoiled, too used to hearing how they are the equal of any man, but still largely uncomprehending what equality means in a meritocracy.  Women of our generation can't imagine that anyone would tell them that they are full of shit, and when it happens, they can only assume that either the person saying they are full of shit is trying to hurt their feelings (so they demand moderation), or is a sexist who is only discounting their opinion because they are a woman (so they demand moderation).

But you can't thrive in an environment like this, where anyone is free to call you on your shit, if you can't tolerate being called on your shit.  And between the girl power empowerment rah-rah cheerleading in the media, and the feminist defense of the inherent validity of women's opinions being used to justify not thinking before speaking, and the tendency of men to play white knight and ride to the rescue of any woman who gets imperiled intellectually, and the generally tendency of guys to not call women on their shit in real life, most women have so little experience with being called on their shit, they can't handle it.  At all.

Witness rpg.net.  Or the WOTC forum.  Or a zillion other places.

Nah. I mean, can I fault my 6 year old nephew for spewing the same hate his father does? Can I fault my SIL's kids for being young earth creationists when that's what they are taught (ages 7-3)?

Kids can't be blamed for their lack of world knowledge. Just pat him on the head and send him out to play in the yard. The grownups can have coffee and chat.
