This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

FWIW the Hobbit movies started filming with a third of a script of the first film. It was not going to begin or end well. Jackson could not salvage its awful mess. Woke of the Rings is indeed boring as heck.

All I can say is that, "They discontinued The Expanse for this?"

And....

"Meh."

To be fair, the last three Expanse novels don't hold up as well as the first six.

EDIT: Didn't need to repost the video.

They paid $250 millions for "What is told about the Second Age in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and the Appendixes, and for a streaming show only.

Yeah, not only do they have little enough material to work from, they also have to steer clear of any actual Silmarillion content.

The CG is reportedly quite good. If you're into that kind of thing.

Now even Elon Musk has weighed in on it. His comment: Almost every male character so far is a coward, a jerk or both. Only Galadriel is brave, smart and nice.

I got about 15 minutes in and changed the channel to She-Hulk. It is pretty bad when MCU feminist propaganda beats out LotR feminist propaganda.

Again, "They discontinued The Expanse for this?"
"Meh."

Yes, Jeff Bezos makes Sauron look like an amateur.

Except she isnt. More foolhardy than brave and not smart enough to recognize Sauron when he is standing right in front of her. (on the other hand, nor does anyone else either)

And Elrond and Durin are totally bros. They just had a misunderstanding to deal with first.

That was kind of the whole point of Sauron's guise as Annatar, after all. Wouldn't be much good if he got recognized immediately.

Very. For all his myriad failures and goof-ups his little disguise trick was masterfully played. And if someone hadn't finally noticed he'd have pulled it all off. But that is Sauron's story afterall. A long long chain of charm, plotting, deception all ending in spectacular failures.

Far Harad is an entire continent of black folks who were historically victimized by the evil Numenoreans. It's a perfect plot for those who want to demonize white people and tell stories about Arda that are relevant to current socio-political issues. It's a lot better than the historical basis for The Woman King, that's for sure. Sauron was basically playing both sides against each other: convincing the Numenoreans to colonize Far Harad and perform human sacrifice, turn the Haradrim against the Numenoreans, convincing some Numenoreans to go native and help the Haradrim fight off the colonizers, convincing the Black Numenoreans and their Haradrim allies to serve Sauron the Liberator, converting to the same religion that they were sacrificed for but with them in charge this time... it's a perfect way to illustrate not just the modern trendy "white people evil!" but also to illustrate how the disenfranchised can be radicalized and engage in monstrous acts in the belief that the ends justify the means. Which is very relevant to modern politics... so naturally Amazon won't touch it at all.

Oh, and if you want black elves, hobbits and dwarves then you could probably invent ethnic groups of them native to Far Harad. It's not like Tolkien is around today to hear fan complaints and make adjustments to his own legendarium.

They say the new prime minister of Italy is a huge fanatic of Tolkien. I wonder what she thinks of Amazon's blasphemous series?
